South Australian Forecast (issued Monday 20th July)

Best Days: Tuesday morning for keen surfers down South, Wednesday for keen surfers on the Mid, Thursday both coasts, Friday morning for keen surfers down South, Saturday down South

Recap

Solid mix of SW and S/SW swells Saturday to 4ft at Middleton and 5-6ft at Waits under improving winds and improving conditions with an increasing N/NE breeze before tending variable. The Mid was clean but tiny and only suitable for beginners.

Sunday was excellent down South with an easing swell from 3-4ft at Middleton with 5ft sets at Waits and Parsons under offshore tending variable breezes. The Mid was clean again but tiny to flat.

Today the swell was small and fading under strengthening offshores, leaving Waits and Parsons with the only decent waves.

This week (Jul 21 - 24)

Tomorrow will be clean down South, but small, tricky and probably not worth the drive from Adelaide with a strong N/NW breeze. The small spike in swell is expected to peak through the morning with inconsistent 2ft sets at Middleton and 2-3ft+ waves at Waits, but again that wind will create problems.

This strong N/NW wind should kick up a building NW windswell across the Mid, reaching 2ft+ into the afternoon.

This windswell should drop into Wednesday from a similar 2ft+ as strong and early N/NW winds, ease and tend more W/NW in direction.

Also in the mix of the afternoon though should be a new W/SW swell, keeping 2ft sets hitting the Mid, holding into Thursday morning before easing into the afternoon.

The South Coast should also build, with tiny waves early, reaching 2-3ft at Middleton later in the day with 3-5ft sets at Waits, easing Thursday from 3ft+ and 4-5ft respectively Thursday morning.

Now winds Wednesday as above should swing from a pre-dawn NW'ly to the W'ly, favouring protected locations down South, while Thursday looks great across both coasts with local offshore breezes all day.

Friday will become small again as we fall in between swells under fresh N/NW tending W/NW winds.

This weekend onwards (Jul 25 onwards)

A fun new mix of W/SW and SW swell are due into Saturday generated by a secondary frontal system pushing up and into WA later this week, followed by a tertiary deepening front passing under us Friday.

These mix of swells should boost the Mid back to 2ft with Middleton offering 3ft+ sets through the day with 4-5ft waves at Waits and Parsons again. A strengthening N/NW wind will favour the South Coast again, with an onshore change due through Sunday afternoon.

This onshore change will be linked to a broad and strong cold outbreak moving in from the west and with this we should see moderate to large amounts of swell for early next week, but with likely poor winds. More on this Wednesday though.
