Indonesia/Maldives forecast Sep 19
Indian Ocean Basin analysis by Craig Brokensha (issued Thursday 19th September)
This week through next (Sep 20 - 27)
A small, inconsistent mid-period SW swell should have shown across the region the last two days, with it expected to ease back into tomorrow, further Saturday.
We then look at the inconsistent S/SW groundswell due into Sunday afternoon and Monday morning.
The source has been a strong polar low that formed late in our swell window to the south-west of Western Australia the last two days. A good fetch of severe-gale W/SW winds were generated and this should produce a moderate + sized but inconsistent increase in size for later Sunday and early Monday.
Reinforcing levels of smaller, lower period and more southerly swell are due later week but this isn’t the most reliable so keep expectations low (the models are incorrectly combining and over-forecasting the sizes).
Of greater significance is the larger swell energy mentioned in the last forecast for the end of the month/start of October
We should see a slow moving, strong polar low drifting in from under South Africa from this weekend through early next week, generating fetches of severe-gale W/SW-SW winds.
The models diverge slightly on the strength and likelihood of follow up systems with EC showing less size but back to back mod-large pulses, while GFS has one large swell for the end of the month. Check back here on Tuesday for more specifics.
Longer term early indicators are for a slow October following the early swells, but we’ll keep an eye on this.
----------------------------------------------
Maldives: After bottoming out in the swell department, we should be starting to see some new mid-period S/SE swell energy on the build across exposed breaks with it due to continue building tomorrow and Saturday towards a peak Sunday/Monday to 4-5ft+.
This is thanks to a great fetch of strong SE trades currently south and south-east of us, with them due to ease a little into the weekend while E/SE trades fire up a little more to the east.
This will see the S/SE swell swinging more SE during early-mid next week for a period and then back S/SE thereafter.
Ebbs and pulses of size in the 4-5ft range all weekend and into next weekend.
There’ll also be a pulse of moderate sized S’ly groundswell in the mix for later Monday but more so Tuesday, generated by a strong low that fired up under South Africa earlier this week.
The system generating the larger surf for Indonesia later week should generate some large S’ly groundswell for us late week, with it forming in a great spot and being ideally aimed.
Eastern Indonesia:
Small surf tomorrow.
Small, inconsistent mid-period SW easing tomorrow and Saturday.
Moderate + sized, inconsistent S/SW groundswell building Sunday afternoon reaching 4-6ft, easing Monday morning from a similar size.
Smaller reinforcing swells for later week.
Moderate to large sized (at least) SW groundswell for 29/30th.
Weak S/SE-S/SW trades over the coming period, variable offshore each morning. Weak E/SE-SE trades kicking back in from late next week.

Western Indonesia/Mentawais/South Sumatra:
Easing surf tomorrow.
Small, inconsistent S’ly groundswell for later Sunday but more so Monday to 3ft across exposed breaks. Mid-period S swell also in the mix.
Small, inconsistent SW groundswell building Wednesday to 4-5ft, easing Thursday from a similar size across exposed breaks.
Moderate to large sized (at least) S/SW groundswell for 28-30th
Fresh S/SE winds across southern locations tomorrow, tending W/SW-SW to the north.
Lighter S/SE-SE winds from the weekend to the south, variable to the north. Winds tending more E/SE-SE to the south from the middle of next week.

Maldives:
Slow increase in S/SE trade-swell from this afternoon but more so Friday, reaching 4-5ft+ (smaller Male) across exposed breaks Sunday, holding Monday.
Reinforcing SE trade-swell to 4-5ft for the rest of the week and weekend.
Moderate sized S’ly groundswell for later Monday, peaking Tuesday to 3-5ft across the southern atolls.
Larger S’ly groundswell likely later in the week (27/28th).
Fresh W/SW-W winds across northern and central locations tomorrow and Saturday, S’y to the south.
Gusty W-W/NW winds across northern and central locations Sunday/Monday, weaker S to the south. Winds weakening a little across northern and central locations Tuesday/Wednesday, increasing again From Thursday.

Sweet baby Jesus , if that forecast holds in early October it’s going to be farking huge ! @Craig , is it just the models jumping around, playing mind games with us ? Look forward to Tuesday’s update .
@Craig , ahhhhh , no need to reply, forecast just dropped 5ft , dam those models !
GFS is always bullish the more it goes out into the forecast period. For long term stuff you’d be best checking the EC model.
Is that ECMWF or EC- ENS model ? I’ve got the windy app but it only forecasts 10 days ahead . Thanks for your input DW.
Yeah, I liked the forecast from Wednesday last week more than this one, it’s pretty flat out there.
I think I spotted you yesterday arvo at the bar supa (Lembongan Surf Team Shirt?)as we where heading out for a grovel .
I’ll come say g’day at some stage
Yep that was me , watched the Bledisloe cup which we haven’t won since 2001 I think , ended up being close but pretty scrappy game . Edit …. 2002 was last time we won , what a drought since then .
Bit of a welcome bump on beachies. Still small on low tide....
Come on Huey!!
Sad, hey andy , it’s my first time to Rote and looks like we may get a wave around 4ft on about the 30th , possibly a head high wave before that if we’re lucky . My mate who brought me down here has been visiting for 30 years and never seen a flat spell this long in September. Still been great to check the place out. Talking to guys that live here and it’s like many places as far as crowds go post covid . 50-70 out is the new normal.
Yep, just saw a clip of Ulus... 2-3 ft today. Looks nice n fun but crowded.
Rote I'm guessing would want west in swell yeah? Never been.
Hopefully forecast stays positive, looking ok for next Sunday onwards....
I'll be hunting down some waves this week, expectations not too high, but will get wet!
Enjoy....
Just got back from the Island of the Gods and NL - you're forecast was spot on last week Craig. Had a great week while nothing major we got fun waves in head high plus range everyday from the 14th until yesterday
Thanks Craig, I sent this to a mate on a surf trip in Indo at the moment and his words were “wow brilliant! “ …any clues as to what mid October might be looking like in Eastern Indonesia for a sneaky late season trip?
Swell this morning punching well above the forecast, unfortunately northerly came up early , managed to get 3 nice ones .
How big?
Overhead , nice 4ft sets , not a hollow wave though, just nice long walls to play on .
Oh nice, yeah that's the new groundswell. Wouldn't have expected to see it in that sheltered area as much though as you said.
Yep was unexpected fun size this morning. Do you think that we will get leftovers tomorrow ?
Yes definitely a groundswell , not much power and maybe 3 waves in a set at best , just a welcome change from knee to waist high . 4 footers weren’t abundant but a few came through .
Left overs confirmed. SN well represented in the drink.
Onya lads. Get some for me. Freezing down here!
Ha, awesome!
Hey soggy , our bungalow has its own private pool table , you and the kids are welcome up for a game when you’re looking for something to do . This weekend is also GF for both codes , it will be on in the bar .
Cheers Supa,
We’re going to checkout a high tide spot in a bit. Reading “Chaos, the truth behind the Manson Murders” atm. It’s a page turner.
Edit: Our pale Great Southern skin has taken a bit of a roasting the last couple of days. Bodys resembling the colours of Neopolitan ice cream.
Ain’t GF for NRL this weekend. Only AFL.
Oh ok I thought they were both last weekend in September .
2 days of fun waves where I've been surfing. Next week has me a bit amped!
