Indonesia/Maldives forecast Aug 27
Indian Ocean Basin analysis by Craig Brokensha (issued Tuesday 27th August)
This week through next (Aug 28 - Sep 6)
Our large S/SW groundswell has filled in today and we’ve seen the south-southwest winds spoil conditions across exposed locations this afternoon with the peak in size.
We’ll see the swell ease back through tomorrow, further Wednesday with some reinforcing, long-range SW groundswell from an off axis but strong low that formed off Madagascar late last week.
This low was mainly aimed north towards the Maldives, with some moderate sized but inconsistent swell spreading out radially from it for Friday, peaking into the afternoon and Saturday morning.
Into later Sunday and more so Monday morning, a moderate + sized pulse of mid-period S/SW swell is due, generated by a small low that will project towards eastern Indonesia over the coming days.
The models are over-forecasting the size and incorrectly combining swells, so expect less size than what’s currently shown.
We’ve then got an inconsistent, but strong long-period S/SW groundswell on the cards for mid-late next week with a strong polar low firing up west of the Heard Island region Thursday, generating a great fetch of storm-force W/NW winds, weakening while pushing further east-northeast and under Australia.
The swell won’t come in as big as it could thanks to the system racing ahead of itself a little, with large surf due Wednesday afternoon and Thursday morning.
We may see a secondary, slightly smaller pulse of southerly groundswell for next weekend but we’ll cover this in the next update.
----------------------------------------------
Over in the Maldives, the weekend’s S/SE trade-swell is due to ease over the coming days thanks to the fetch of swell generating trades weakening a little.
We’ll see the trades pick back up and slowly shift more east through this week and weekend, resulting in building levels of S/SE trade swell later this week and into the weekend, easing slowly next week while tending more SE in direction.
Of greater significance across the southern atolls is a larger S’ly groundswell due into this afternoon and tomorrow morning, generated by a significant low that formed off Madagascar late last week.
This swell will ease through the rest of the week as the trade-swell takes dominance.
Winds look to become a bit of an issue later week, strengthening from the S/SE across southern locations, weaker into next week.
Eastern Indonesia:
Large, easing S/SW groundswell tomorrow from 8ft across exposed breaks.
Small-moderate sized, inconsistent SW groundswell for Friday, building to 4-5ft, easing from 3-5ft Saturday morning
Moderate + sized, mid-period S/SW swell for later Sunday, peaking Monday morning to 5-6ft across exposed breaks.
Large S/SW groundswell building Wednesday, reaching 8ft across exposed breaks, easing Thursday from a similar size.
Moderate S/SE winds over the coming days and weekend, variable each morning, with moderate to fresh E/SE-SE trades for next week.

Western Indonesia/Mentawais/South Sumatra:
Large, easing S/SW groundswell over the coming days.
Inconsistent, moderate + sized SW groundswell Thursday to 5-6ft across exposed breaks.
Moderate sized S’ly swell for Sunday afternoon to 4-6ft across exposed breaks, easing Monday.
Moderate to large S/SW groundswell for later Wednesday and Thursday morning to 6ft across exposed breaks.
Moderate sized S’ly swell through next week.
Strengthening S/SE-SE trades over the coming days, lighter to the north tomorrow. Winds easing a touch but remaining fresh early next week.
Mentawai 16-day Forecast Graph/WAMs
Maldives:
Easing S/SE swell over the coming days, before building again later week, peaking on the weekend to 5-6ft across exposed breaks (smaller Male).
Swell slowly easing and tweaking SE next week.
Larger S’ly groundswell for later today and tomorrow morning to 6-8ft across the southern atolls.
E/SE-SE winds across southern locations tomorrow (W/SW-SW to the north), strengthening from the S/SE Friday with S/SW winds to the north.
Easing winds into the weekend, E/SE to the south and W/NW to the north.

Latest notes are live.
Craig wrote “ The models are over-forecasting the size and incorrectly combining swells, so expect less size than what’s currently shown. “ yes when I saw the 15ft forecast for 4th September at Gland my initial thought was oh shit goofyfoot be careful what you wish for hahaha anyway it’s now saying 10ft for his arrival day so why not jump in head first at the deep end . Good luck GF , I’m sure you will score .
I was caught off guard this arvo with that pesky onshore, lots of bump on the faces and large crumbling sections hopefully the trades kick back in tomorrow.
Even subdued for the Maldives?
Been at kandooma for near on a week and seen nothing over chest high. Almost entirely waist high. Frustrating to say the least as winds have been good.
Spewing, yeah the trade-swell has a bit of south in the component at the moment. Not really improving in direction until next week.
If you’re still there come Sunday this weekend I would expect that situation to change for the better. Looks to be some good swell aimed off the top of that large high in the Indian Ocean later this week.
Arrive there (Nth Atolls) Sat evening - happy days. Any thoughts for next week Don? Wind forecasts from what I can see look ok - predominately West or a bit NW.
Waning swell from Monday onwards through next week with some potential for a new boost 2nd weekend in September. I take local wind forecasts with a grain of salt as anywhere around the equator have their own micro climate that models just can't reliably predict.
Thanks Don. My ability to read the models is pretty bad. Seems to suggest the trade swell will hang in around the shoulder height most of the week?
Later Sat and more so Sun/Mon coming looks solid. I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see upwards of 5ft sets Sun/Mon at the swell magnets.
Looks to drop back around that 3-4ft range after this possibly even back down to 3ft by the end of the working week next week. EC charts are showing some potential for a building swell back up into the 4-5ft range possibly around 7th/8th. But worth noting GFS isn’t being as optimistic as EC so still some potential revision to this second swell.
I've got 5-6ft for the weekend's pulse. Got very similar in the notes for subs.
Yep I’d agree with the 5-6ft. Subs?
Subscribers.
I now have a quandary of what boards to pack - a very good one. The 6'6" step up is now definitely in. Happy days. Fingers crossed the wind co-operates. Lohis looks like it prefers a bit of Nth in the west. Thanks Don and Craig.
It seems Kandooma has had average season this year GH, any comments from Perfect Wave guides?
As expected they probably prefer to keep things upbeat. I get it.
Apparently an average 2 weeks or so before I got here. Heard that from another surfer. That’s all I know.
Motoring up north tomorrow again for some 2/3 fters hopefully. She can be a cruel mistress sometimes.
I'm Southern Atols 9th onwards- too far out to make a loose call?
(Don- finally pulled the trigger, my first ever charter. Fark I hope we get a few good sessions in)
Edit- my bro lands in the Ments today and meeting up with me on the 9th. Looks like he's gonna score.
Good luck Zen. Had a good time and decent waves down that way a few years ago. Blue Bowls is ok - was fairly crowded though. Stayed around Love Charms and Five Islands for a while. Five Islands had meat to it, but we didn't get it on. Love Charms is one of the funnest lefts I have surfed in the 3ft range. Lot trickier than the Nth.
Cheers Fraz and Supa. Can't hide it, I'm pretty psyched.
Fingers and toes crossed we get some tasty waves and the winds come to the party.
(yeah- wasn't cheap, coulda done Indo for half the price but that's where I'm at)
Who's the charter through?
I went to the Southern Atolls with Perfect Wave back in 2010's sometime, on the Cobia, and they were shite. The guide, Martey, a complete flog...all about him. He'd be hassling guests for waves FFS. Would never go with them again.
Did World Surfaris on the Sharifa 7 years back - they were really good. Local guide and he could really surf but no hassling. Hard to believe the guide doing that - f off - would have had a few words with him.
We are going on the Maavahi. I don't really know much about it but it has some good reviews. We booked through World Surfaris and not giving them a plug but they've been really good. Kept us up to date and informed.
It's just my bro and I tacking on to another group- don't know anything about the other guests except there's three other Aussies. I'm sure it will be cool, just gotta make the most of it.
Goodness I hope (pray) we get some swell and good winds. Some mates went a few years ago and got pretty much skunked.
Zenagain
We went on Maavahi October 2022 - great trip, nice boat and crew - no complaints what so ever.
We were lucky enough that it didn’t drop below 3’ the whole trip. Wind was up a little, basically the entire trip, but we had offshore surf options and surfed everyday.
Good luck.
Awesome Frodge, thankyou very much. That's what I wanted to hear.
Edit: Just offhand, how were the crowds and overall vibe in the water? As mentioned, I've never actually ever done a surf charter before.
Well done Zen on pulling the trigger. I hope you score. I’m sure you’ll get swell this early in the season down south. Biggest risk this time of the year down there will be winds. So you may have to seek some shelter or even high tail it over to the west side.
Cheers Don. Excited is an understatement.
Zenagain
It would be fair to say, apart from the winds being strong at times, we scored on our trip - if daily 3-5’ with the odd bigger session makes you happy.
Crowds weren’t really an issue. Maybe 1-2 other boats at times which was never really an issue crowd wise, and we were lucky enough to score 3-5’ blue bowls to ourselves for 2-3 days.
Good luck.
Cheers man, no doubt it'll be fun either way. Looking forward to it.
Holy fck you got 3-5ft blue bowls to yourself for 2-3 days. Where the fck were the other boats?
By that stage we were probably entering the second week of October.
One boat’s charter had just finished up and left.
Another boat rocked up, their surf guide was related to our surf guide - the story went along the lines of the guests on the other boat were return visitors and adamant to surf a break on the mid north east of the atoll, going against their surf guides advice.
So our boat was left alone in the channel. Happy days.
I sincerely hope all you blokes going to the maldives score , it would really suck to get skunked on an expensive holiday, one that you probably dream of for months in the lead up .
Hey Craig,
Sorry to repost but I asked late in last week's notes but should I expect the banyak islands to be similar to the nias forecast?
Cheers.
Oh Sorry Ryan, it's a bit more sheltered from south swells so smaller from that direction, but if it's got period and more south-west, then yes, similar. For the most part though I'd expect it to be a little smaller.
Thanks mate
Be interested to hear how you go Ryan. Been there a few times and scored. The right hander in the bay is really best suited in the 3-6 ft range - so you don't need big swell for it to be really good. First time was many moons ago and I surfed a bit alone or with 3-4 blokes generally. We stayed on land. Next time there was 6 boats in the bay and 40 blokes on one peak - circus. Not spots that cater well to a lot of surfers. The right is sick and the left inside the bay when the other two outer breaks are very big is soooooo fun - just spins and spins. I think it's called Dondos - we called it Dildo's as there is a certain rock that seemed to collect the flesh of a number of our back sides.
Haha! Yeah on a boat so hoping to avoid crowds but will report back. Leave on Saturday
Interested to hear back Ryan, I’m going there first week of October.
Hope u score.
Also be interested to hear about the crowds. Have heard it’s a bit of a zoo up there these days now. But I do hope you score some uncrowded waves.
There’s a few lesser known spots up there but I won’t say any more. Which boat you on?
BTW I believe the little left inside the bay is called Dindos. And it sure is a super fun wave. Just so so perfect and repeatable wave.
We're on the pulse. The guy who has organised the trip has been a handful of times and rates it highly. My brother did a land based camp there a few years ago and said they managed to surf with a handful out most times so I'm hopeful
Yep Pulse is the money boat up there. If Marcus is your skipper he'll definitely get you into uncrowded waves. It's a damn sick boat too. Shame it's soooo fcking expensive now.
It is sick hey Don. That rock though about half way through is dangerous. Had it solid 3-4ft by myself a few times first trip. Alas - second trip there were 20 odd friends to share it with me each time. Place turned into a zoo, which was sad.
