Eastern Tasmanian Forecast by Steve Shearer (issued Fri Sep 13th)
Features of the Forecast (tl;dr)
- Strong S swell likely Sat, into Sun before easing
- Fresh/strong S/SW-S winds Sat, easing Sun and tending W’ly in the a’noon
- S gro undswell pulses Mon/Tues with offshore winds
- Possible N’ly windswell wrap Wed from NW gales out of Bass Strait
- More minor S swells into the end of next week and into the weekend
Recap
More tiny NE windswells yesterday and today with size to 1ft or so and variable winds now tending S/SE.
This weekend and next week (Sep13 - Sep 20)
No great change to the weekend f/cast. We have a follow-up front and trough expected to push into the Tasman later Sat, this time backed by a monster high (1042 hPa) in the Bight. Steep pressure gradients will create near gales to gales in a proximate S’ly fetch and whip up plenty of sizey S swell later Sat.
Expect size to build from 2ft to 5-6ft on Sat under fresh/strong SW tending S’ly winds.
Size holds into Sun morning before easing with winds shifting from S/SW-S to W as another front approaches the state.
Windy fronts to start next week (see below), which will see more S swell pulses. Mon should see 3-4ft S swells, at S facing beaches with another frontal system pushing into the Tasman bringing offshore winds.
More S swells from the frontal progression Tues easing into Wed with winds freshening from the W/NW-NW.
We may see some NE windswell wrap wrap Wed from NW gales out of Bass Strait.
More zonal fronts pushing into the Tasman for the second half of next week, will supply tiny pulses of S swell wrap right through next week and into the weekend with fresh W’ly winds
No let-up in S swells as we move into next weekend and and the following week beginning 23/9.
The southern swell window looks very active through the short and medium term.
Check back Mon and we’ll update with fresh info.
Until then, have a great weekend!
