Eastern Tasmania Surf Forecast by Steve Shearer (issued Fri Jan 26th)

Features of the Forecast (tl;dr)

  • Nothing much for the end of the week and into the weekend
  • Small/tiny surf continues into next week
  • Possibly sizey S swell later next week

Recap

Small NE swells to 1-2ft yesterday under offshore winds have continued at similar or just bigger sizes today under more mod/fresh W tending W/SW winds.

This weekend and next week (Jan26 - Feb2)

Mostly offshore winds all weekend as fronts pass over the state with small levels of NE swell Sat. Expect surf in the 1-2ft range brushed by W/NW tending W/SW winds.
Similar Sun with some tiny S swell wrap in the mix and just surfable 1-1.5ft surf.

Into next week and not much happening to start the new week. High pressure moves quickly into the Tasman, with winds shifting NW-NE then SW-SE as a trough pushes through a shallow change. A  front passing into the Tasman Sun is likely to leave some small S swell trains in the water for Mon, in the 1-2ft range at S facing beaches, mixed with some minor NE winsdswell to 1-1.5ft. All marginal stuff.

That leaves a tiny blend of S and NE swells to carry through in the 1-1.5ft range into Tues , Wed and likely Thurs. Variable/light onshore winds Tues extend into Wed although we may see some shallow wind changes depending on the movement of troughs near the coast. Keep the grovellers and high volume boards handy.

Later next week we should see a stronger series of fronts pass through the lower Tasman. A weaker front Wed may bring some small S swell later Wed into Thurs but a much stronger system tracks NE into the Tasman Thurs/Fri (see below) with a wide band of gales suggesting a more substantial S swell event Fri. Too far out to have any confidence in specifics but pencil in a S’ly groundswell late next week.

Deeper low brings a better quality S swell later next week

We’ll keep tabs on that over the weekend and see how it looks on Mon.

Seeya then and have a great weekend!
