Large swell possible mid next week as low forms in soupy Tasman Sea
Eastern Tasmania Surf Forecast by Steve Shearer (issued Fri Jan 12th)
Features of the Forecast (tl;dr)
- Small S swell Sat, slightly bigger Sun PM with S-SE winds both days
- NE windswell episode Mon PM / buildog further into Tues and Wed AM
- Another low may form E of Tasmania Wed next week with large swells from Wed-Fri- still low confidence in specifics, check back Mon for revisions
Recap
Only tiny surf in the 1ft range yesterday, holding in a similar size range today with NE winds freshening and tending NW late in the day.
This weekend and next week (Jan12 - Jan19)
No great change to the weekend f/cast with high pressure in the Tasman moving towards New Zealand and a trough and front expected over the weekend in advance of the next major high.
Sat sees light/mod S’ly winds establish in the wake of a front and small S swell wrap to 2ft become established.
Size holds into Sun morning before pulsing again in the a’noon to 2ft with continuing S-S/SE winds.
A strong high then moves into the Tasman next week moving over the state Mon with light winds tending NE on the a’noon and some leftover S swell to 2ft , easing during the day.
NE windswell increases Tues to 3ft as a trough approaches.
A major swell is possible from Wed as a deep low may form in a a trough line either E of Tasmania or off the Gippsland coast, possibly moving up off the NSW South Coast - enhanced by extra warm water pooled up in that region.
That may see gales develop next to Tasmania Wed with a rapid increased in S swell to 6ft or more. If the low moves slowly north we may then see swells develop from the SE through E into Thurs and Fri.
With the current ultra troughy, unstable pattern and the Tasman Sea a hot, soupy mess we can also expect revisions, possibly major on Mon.
Seeya then and have a great weekend
