Eastern Tasmania Surf Forecast by Steve Shearer (issued Wed Nov 15)

Features of the Forecast (tl;dr)

  • Smaller S swell pulse Fri
  • Small mixed bag Sat
  • Another strong S’ly pulse  Sun
  • S swell leftovers Mon, with possible small NE windswell
  • Small E’ly swells possible next week

Recap

S’ly swells built to 3-5ft yesterday a’noon with winds tending variable in the a’noon. Light winds again today with 3ft of S swell at S exposed breaks.

This week and next week (Nov 15- Nov24)

A troughy pattern spawns a compact Tasman low in the short term with S’ly groundswell making it’s way up the Tasman Pipe. Another deep low is expected to bomb under the continent and send more long period groundswell our way late this weekend under a continuing unstable, trough pattern.

In the short run a front passing the state brings mod/fresh SW winds tending S’ly in the a’noon with some new short range S swell to 2-3ft at S facing beaches. Keep an eye out for patches of lighter winds in a small troughy area.

Winds then tend from SW to NW-SW on Fri with continuing S swells to 2-3ft.

Expect a small mixed bag for Sat, with mostly easing S swells to 1-2ft and offshore winds.

Sunday sees another long period S swell pulse. Another powerful low tracking into the Far Southern Tasman- this time at potential storm force- sends more uncommonly long period S swell into the Tasman (although better aimed up the Tasman Sea pipe towards Fiji). With swell periods potentially  in the 14-15 second band there’ll be some real juice in the swell. Expect S swells to 3-4ft, building to 4-5ft during the day. Offshore NW winds should be primo.

Easing S swells on Mon with light winds early tending SSE as a new high pressure ridge builds in. We may see some small NE windswell from an infeed into a trough which may form a small low.

Surf next week depends on where this small low sits. We may see some small E-SE swell through next week if the low sits low enough in the Tasman.

We’ll review that on Fri .

Seeya then.
