Eastern Tasmania Surf Forecast by Steve Shearer (issued Fri Nov 10)

Features of the Forecast (tl;dr)

  • Strong NE windswell Fri, peaking Sat, slowly easing Sun
  • S swell pulses likely next week- with biggest surf Tues and Wed
  • More S swell pulses into the end of next week

Recap

NE windswell started to build yesterday with size up into the 2-3ft range under freshening NE winds. A further increase today is seeing surf in the 3-4ft range with occ. bigger sets under mod/fresh NE winds tending N’ly.

This weekend and next week (Nov 10- Nov17)

No great change to the weekend f/cast. The N’ly fetch reaches peak strength o/night and into Sat morning with a corresponding peak in NE windswell expected. We should see size in the 4-6ft range through Sat with initial N’ly winds before a trough brings a S’ly change around lunch-time.

Winds should shift back N’ly on Sun although a small troughy area may see some periods of variable NW-SW winds. Easing but still workable NE swells to 3ft in the morning will fade back through the day.

Much stronger frontal activity in the Far Southern Tasman tied to a deep, slow moving low will provide long period S’ly groundswell pulses next week, although winds are looking very tricky around a weak, troughy pattern and the fetch looks a tad more zonal (W-E) than it did on Mon.

Surf-wise a small long period pulse fills in mid morning Mon, mostly offering 2-3ft sets at S facing beaches with a few magnets hoovering up the odd bigger set. Winds should be NW-W and offer clean conditions.

Stronger S swell arrives later Tues with winds looking very variable around a stalled trough line. Likely we’ll see variable winds. Don’t be surprised though if those wind outlooks don’t change over the weekend. Long period S swell builds to 4ft later Tues and a new pulse Wed offers up some bigger 4-6ft sets at S facing beaches . Surf quality will depend on winds, so stay tuned for updates.

Tasman Sea continues to generate at least small S swell pulses into the end of next week.

A strong high moving into the Tasman before straddling NZ next weekend also looks to build E/NE winds in the Northern Tasman and more local NE winds off Bass Strait, suggesting another round of NE windswell later next weekend.

We’ll see how it all looks on Mon, until then, have a great weekend!
