Eastern Tasmania Surf Forecast by Steve Shearer (issued Wed 20th Sep)

Features of the Forecast (tl;dr)

  • Easing NE swell Thurs AM with a small bump in S swell in the a’noon
  • More small fun S swell pulses Fri, easing Sat
  • Quiet start to next week
  • Workable NE windswell likely Wed/Thurs next week

 as a compact Recap

Small NE swells developed yesterday to 2ft, continuing into today with fresh and gusty W/NW-W'ly winds.

This week and next week (Sep20 - Sep29)

High pressure is now close to New Zealand, with a strong zonal front pushing across Tas and bringing strong W/NW winds. Small fronts and lows bring some minor S swell pulses to the NE corner later this week, before high pressure drifts across the Island and brings calm conditions. A few small swell sources are possible but in general we’re looking at a quiet period.

In the short run we’ll see winds shift SW through the morning as a small front passes into the Tasman. Small NE swells from the NSW fetch see 2ft sets with minor S swell to 2ft in the a’noon, although blown out at S facing beaches.

Winds shift back more W-W/NW on Fri with a bit more S swell to play with as a compact low passes through the Tasman, into the 2ft+ range at S facing beaches.

The weekend sees small S swell Sat to 1-2ft with light winds as high pressure passes over the state. Might need to surf that because Sun looks tiny with light winds, tending N’ly.

Not much in offer to start the new week, just a small blend of S swell and background E/NE swell topping out at 1ft.

A weak front Tues brings S’ly winds with some small S swell to go with it. No great size with 2ft sets tops.

We may see some workable NE swell develop Wed/Thurs as high pressure moves East of the state and winds freshen off the South Coast down to Bass Strait. We’ll pencil in 2-3ft surf through Thurs and see how it shapes up on Fri.

Nothing much on offer later next week so grab any small sessions you can.

Check back Fri for the latest.
