Recap

Small amounts to S swell peaked yesterday in the 2-3ft range at S facing beaches with W’ly winds and have eased back to 1-2ft today with NW winds beginning to freshen.

This week and next week (Aug2 - Aug 11)

A massive high (1035 hPa) is currently moving over temperate NSW into the Tasman Sea, with a SE surge extending up the sub-tropical to tropical Eastern Seaboard, and a more NW’ly flow south of Bass Stait. The bifurcation between the sub-tropics and temperate regions increases through the end of the week with NE windswell extending down to NE Tas and E’ly tradewind swells building in the sub-tropics.

In the short run we’ll see NE windswell start to show tomorrow as N’ly winds build down to Bass Strait. Nothing major, up into the 2ft range during the a’noon under a fresh NW flow.

Bigger surf is expected Fri as NW winds shift more N’ly and freshen as they extend down to Tasmanian latitudes. Expect 1-2ft surf, early building to 2ft+ during the a’noon.

The building trend continues o/night with Sat seeing a NE windswell in the 3ft range, easing rapidly as a front tied to a compact low brings W/NW-W winds during the day. Get in when the wind changes for best results.

N'ly winds freshening Fri as low approaches

By Sunday we’ll see S’ly winds, easing quickly as the low moves away rapidly. S swell gets a downgrade as the low quickly moves away from the swell window with only a few 2ft sets expected Sun morning before surf eases rapidly in the a’noon.

Not a great deal of action the charts to start next week. A weak, troughy pattern in the Tasman, holding a light onshore SE flow across the region for Mon and Tues with a small blend of SE-E swells Mon and traces of long period S swell in the mix Tues. All told it looks like a continuation of weak 1-2ft surf at best.

A little more potential from mid week as N’ly winds freshen down to Bass Strait with good chances of a round of workable NE windswell.

We’ll peg it at 2-3ft for now and see how it looks on Friday.

Seeya then.
