This week and weekend (Aug 10 - 15)
Currently a deep and powerful low has formed just south-east of us, and we're seeing a fetch of strong to gale-force E/SE-SE winds generated in our southern and south-eastern swell windows.
We'll see this fetch retro-grade west with the low shifting that direction, cutting off the swell generation, but a new fetch of strong to gale E/SE winds are forecast to develop off the southern tip of New Zealand.
Following this the low will move back up past our coast on Sunday, bringing a strong S/SE change.
Three different swells are expected from these sources, the first peaking tomorrow morning out of the S/SE to 4ft across northern ends.
Winds will be best in the morning with a fresh W/SW offshore, shifting S/SW into the afternoon. Sunday then looks poor with fresh S/SE winds and a mix of swells to a similar 4ft.
Monday is looking great with offshore W/NW tending W/SW winds and easing levels of SE swell from the 4ft range, but some new E/SE groundswell from the fetch of New Zealand. Keeping the surf up around 4ft most of the day.
We'll see the size starting to drop into Tuesday out of the E/SE, but a new S'ly groundswell is expected to arrive into the afternoon, produced by a polar fetch of severe-gale W/SW winds just within our southern swell window on Sunday.
The size off this looks to come in at 3ft on the sets across south swell magnets into the late afternoon as morning offshore W/NW winds go sea breezes from the N/NW.
Wednesday looks to ease from a similar size with W tending NW winds.
Longer term there's nothing too significant on the cards, so try and work the coming swells and winds.
