Eastern Tasmania Surf Forecast by Craig Brokensha (issued Friday 2nd August)

Best Days: Sunday onwards

Recap

Plenty of swell left in the wake of Wednesday's pulse yesterday, with great conditions through the morning.

Today a small and fleeting pulse of secondary S'ly swell was seen, generated by a significant low skirting up past our south-east corner. This swell is due to drop rapidly today, tiny into this afternoon.

This weekend and early next week (Aug 3 – 9)

Tomorrow will start tiny to flat, but we'll see a broadening and strengthening polar frontal progression projecting a fetch of strong to gale-force SW winds past our south-east corner into the afternoon. There may be a small and late pulse of swell, but Sunday is the best day to surf with a better and larger groundswell filling in from the elongated SW fetch.

Size wise we're looking at surf between 3-5ft across south magnets on Sunday morning, easing a touch through the day and then easing slowly from a similar if not slightly smaller size Monday morning.

Our reinforcing S/SE groundswell for Tuesday is still on the cards, with a tight polar fetch of storm-force S/SW winds developing at the base of the progression moving through this weekend.A good kick to 3-4ft is due again on Tuesday, easing into Wednesday from 2-3ft.

Into the rest of the week we're likely to see fun background levels of S/SE swell owing to a persistent though small fetch of S/SE gales on the polar shelf early next week. It looks like sets between 2-3ft are due across south magnets until the weekend.

Coming back to the local winds and a morning W/NW will create great conditions tomorrow but with the tiny surf, though shifting S'th into the afternoon, W tending N'th on Sunday, favouring those south magnets.

NW winds will continue to favour south magnets Monday, similar Tuesday ahead of straighter W'ly tending N breeze Wednesday. Longer term a strong frontal progression moving across the south-east of the country may bring a S'ly swell with wind next week, but more on this Monday. Have a great weekend!
