Fun mix of east swells tomorrow, easing into the weekend
Eastern Tasmania Forecast by Craig Brokensha (issued Wednesday 2nd September)
Best Days: Thursday protected spots, Friday morning, Sunday morning northern corners, Monday northern corners
Recap
Great waves across the last couple of days with large offshore surf yesterday and then more manageable and good options today under all day offshore winds as the swell started to ease from the E/SE.
This week and weekend (Sep 3 – Sep 6)
The E/SE swell from a broad and weakening fetch of E/SE winds between us and New Zealand will continue to ease through tomorrow, from an inconsistent 2-3ft or so across open beaches. A new inconsistent E'ly groundswell should be in the mix though, generated by a fetch of severe-gale to storm-force E'ly winds exiting New Zealand's Cook Strait on Monday evening (shown as purple barbs right).
This should fill in through the day and offer inconsistent but strong 3ft to occasionally 4ft bombs across open beaches, easing through the late afternoon and further Friday.
Winds will swing from a morning SW'ly around to a fresh and gusty S'ly through the day, favouring protected locations and also kicking up a small windswell for the afternoon.
This windswell will fade quickly Friday though, along with the E'ly swell from 2ft with W/NW offshores.
Into the weekend small pulses of S'ly groundswell and short-range S'ly swell are due from a couple of weak fronts moving through our swell window later this week.
Only a small 2-3ft wave across south facing beaches is due Saturday but with average SW tending S/SE winds. Sunday should offer similar sized sets but strengthening N/NE winds will limit options to protected northern corners and also kick up some building N/NE windswell.
This windswel has actually got some oomph to it, with a broad and elongated fetch of N/NE winds now due to develop overnight Sunday.
This should see north-east facing beaches offering 3-5ft sets before winds swing offshore through the day from the N/NW, resulting in an afternoon drop in size.
After this there's another S'ly windswell pulse on the cards for Wednesday, but we'll have another look at this on Friday.
