Good S/SE groundswell, dicey winds, large stormy swell later next week
Eastern Tasmania Forecast by Craig Brokensha (issued Friday 12th June)
Best Days: Monday, Tuesday morning
Recap
Easing fun S'ly swell yesterday from 2-3ft across south facing beaches, with a small kick in size today keeping those swell magnets topped up with small fun waves.
This weekend and next week (Jun 13 - 19)
Today's small kick in S'ly groundswell is due to be gone tomorrow with tiny clean surf left across the coast.
Sunday won't be any better although winds will go onshore into the afternoon.
Our pulse of S/SE groundswell due to build through Monday is still on track, although the size has been dropped a little and winds are now also due to go onshore with a deepening trough/low combo across the south-east of the country.
The deep stalling polar low generating this swell is currently south of New Zealand and a fetch of severe-gale to storm-force S'ly winds will be generated on the edge of our swell window this evening, with a strong and inconsistent S/SE groundswell spreading out radially towards us
The swell should build strongly Monday, peaking through the afternoon to 3-5ft across exposed breaks before easing back from 3ft+ Tuesday morning.
Early Monday variable winds are likely but a developing onshore E/SE breeze is due into the afternoon. Tuesday morning should see an early NW'ly before swinging NE through the afternoon, so go the morning surf.
Come Wednesday the S/SE swell will be small to tiny, but building levels of windswell are due across the coast as the low starts to deepen as it moves offshore Wednesday evening.
Current forecasts (which have been moving around a bit) have a strengthening fetch of E'ly gales being aimed into us, kicking up a large and stormy E'ly swell from Thursday through Friday.
We'll see no improvement in conditions until the low slips further south which may occur into Saturday, but we'll provide an update on this and the evolution of the low on Monday. Have a great weekend.
