Large S'ly groundswell Monday
Eastern Tasmania Forecast by Craig Brokensha (issued Friday 10th April)
Best Days: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday
Recap
A moderate to large sized increase in E/SE swell yesterday with protected southern corners fairing the best with winds from the southern quadrant.
Today the swell eased back much more than anticipated with much smaller 2-3ft waves reported across the coast with morning offshores.
This weekend and next week (Apr 11 - 17)
With the E/SE swell dropping back from 2-3ft already this morning, tomorrow should be smaller again with a small easing 1-2ft wave across open beaches under W/NW winds ahead of a late S/SW change.
Sunday is expected to start out tiny but into the late afternoon and evening a strong and large pulse of S'ly groundswell should start to show across south facing beaches. The source of this swell will be a vigorous polar low forming south of us tomorrow, projecting north up into the Tasman Sea while generating a fetch of S/SW gales through our south swell window.
A large and powerful long-period S'ly groundswell is expected, kicking late to 4-5ft across south swell magnets but with poor S'ly winds.
A peak is due Monday morning to 6ft+ across south facing beaches with 3-4ft waves at remaining beaches. Deep water reefs should offer much larger sets. Winds should be better and offshore from the W ahead of afternoon sea breezes.
A drop in size is due into the afternoon and further down through Tuesday from 4-5ft across south facing beaches as the swell tweaks a little more S/SE in direction. Winds should be better for these spots as well with a NW tending fresh NE wind.
Come Wednesday a mix of easing S/SE swell and new NE windswell are due, to 2-3ft across north-east facing beaches and 3ft+ at south facing locations. Winds look to flirt from the N'th all day, better and from the N/NW during the morning and evening.
Longer term there's nothing significant on the cards, so plan around the coming S'ly groundswell event.
