Central QLD Forecaster Notes by Steve Shearer (updated on Fri 7th July)

This weekend and next week (July7-Jul 14 )

Central QLD: Tiny/flat surf with another round of fun waves from mid next week

We’re currently seeing both the tropical air mass and trough, and strong node of the Long Wave Trough exit our sphere of influence to the East and far South. A more typical winter pattern which we saw in June is set to return, with high pressure over the continent ridging against frontal activity with a W’ly flow extending right up to the sub-tropics.  That will see tiny/flat surf develop across CQ through the rest of this week and over the weekend.

Next week looks a little more promising as a new high brings a SE surge up the QLD sub-tropical to tropical coasts. The strongest winds are north of Mackay but the broad coverage across the Central Coral Sea beginning from Tues should see rideable waves extend down to the Burnett coast from Tues and extend until Fri next week at least. Nothing major- 1-2ft tops but surfable under SE winds.

Check back Fri for the latest.

Fri Update: Still looking promising from mid next week as high pressure moves into the Tasman at a N'ly latitude and a SE surge builds up the QLD Coast. By Thurs we should see SE winds develop through the Coral Sea and extend out to New Caledonia, with fun 2ft surf developing across CQ and extending into next weekend.

Check back Mon for the latest and until then, have a great weekend!
