Flat/tiny surf with potential next week
Central QLD Forecaster Notes by Steve Shearer (updated on Mon 26th June)
This weekend and next week (June26-Jul 7)
Central QLD: Flat/tiny surf with potential next week
Tiny/flat surf has continued since the last notes.
High pressure sitting up at sub-tropical latitudes is allowing a very active series of fronts to penetrate NE into the Tasman Sea. A very slow moving monster high tracking into WA longitudes is anchoring a sustained SW flow as the fronts ride up it’s extended flank from the Southern Ocean into the Tasman. That is maintaining tiny/flat surf across CQ with just traces of background E/SE swell expected this week.
Next week looks more promising as the large high pressure moves across NSW and sets up a ridge along the QLD Coast. By Sun we’ll be looking out for an approaching trough from QLD, dragging down moisture from the Indian Ocean/Arafura Sea. Still lots of model divergence but we can’t rule out a surface trough or even ECL forming off the Central QLD Coast and moving southwards although recent model runs have cooled right down on that scenario. Under that scenario we would expect sizey E/NE swell to start building Mon or Tues and extending into Wed, possibly in the 4ft range.
Thats a long way away so check back and we'll see how it's shaping up Wed.
