Surface low moves south out of CQ swell window leading to tiny surf this week
Central QLD Forecaster Notes by Steve Shearer (issued on Mon 28th Mar)
This weekend and next week (Mar28-Apr 8)
Central QLD: Surface low moves south out of CQ swell window leading to tiny surf this week
A coastal trough lies along most of the NSW Coast, with a pronounced deepening off the North Coast. A parallel Monsoon Trough extends down the Coral Sea and out to New Caledonia. High pressure over New Zealand is feeding very moist E’ly winds into these trough systems. The northern end of the coastal trough system is expected to deepen into a surface low through tonight into tomorrow, off the SEQLD coast, moving south through Wednesday.
This quickly drags the E’ly winds southwards away from the CQ swell window.
With surf currently barely breaking, a few small waves are expected through tomorrow before the surf retreats back to tiny levels.
For the rest of the week, we’ll see a monster low in the Tasman Sea, but this will be well out of the CQ swell window, leading to tiny/flat surf and light winds for the rest of this week.
Again, a better week to be fishing than surfing.
Into next week and a large, dominant high sets up a ridge along the QLD coast that does have some surf potential for CQ. At the moment with the Tasman low only slowly drifting NE, the winds in the ridge are very southerly, limiting surf potential. At present we may see a small increase from Tues next week, but this is too far off to have confidence in.
