Strong hybrid low tracking down QLD coast brings plenty of surf to start New Year
Central QLD Forecaster Notes by Steve Shearer (issued on Fri 31 Dec)
This week and next (Dec 31 – Jan7)
Central QLD: Plenty of surf NYE/NY day as hybrid tropical low tracks down from Northern Coral Sea, eases quickly once low tracks south of Fraser Coast.
A hybrid tropical low is now located E/SE of Cairns and moving SE, energising a long, broad fetch of SE winds as it squeezes onto a supporting high pressure system in the Tasman Sea. Fresh to strong SE winds are already whipping up rideable surf along the northern parts of the CQ coast, extending down to more southern parts during the day.
Expect size in the 2-3ft range to peak during the day in the North today.
Areas from Yeppoon south will be the beneficiary of an intensification of the hybrid low (possible TC) through today, likely peaking in the 3ft range tomorrow, bigger 3-4ft at more exposed breaks in the Burnett coast. That offers a great morning of waves to start the New Year off. Winds will be fresh/strong SE so you’ll need to tuck in behind a headland or surf in the fetch. Either way there’ll be plenty of wave energy on hand to kick off 2022.
Size will roll off quickly Sun as the system tracks south out of the swell window. Leftovers in the 2ft range will quickly drop away to 1-2ft during the day at more exposed breaks, although winds should improve, tending more S’ly and backing down a few notches.
Longer term and the surf goes back to sleep along the Capricorn coast through next week. Models are suggesting a retrograding tropical low later next week, pushing in from the New Caledonia area, back towards the QLD coast. That does offer some potential for small surf later next weekend at the more exposed breaks.
More on that Mon. Grab some surf while it's there and have a great New Years!

Looks like the sweep is pretty hectic there now
No one keen on the Late at Aggie point.....Lots of Tide on it ..Bigger waves look fun still
Thanks to whoever moved the cam out a bit.
Am I missing something? Looks fat and horrendously crowded.
Whats all the fuss about?
Goofy, have a glance at the Agnes cam each day for the next year. You'll see what the fuss is about :)
No worries tick, I’ll keep my cynical eye on it.
;-)
Full and fat with the early high tide but still some decent size.
Set of the morning goes through unridden!
Agnaimea Bay
Goofy, when I lived on D-bah hill, the Shaw family moved in down the lane. They talked A W up big time and watching the cam I just thought it was all due to crew being used to wind swell and frothing over anything that you could actually stand up on.
Until yesterday, mid tide to low, then back up to mid again, mate, there was some real fun stuff to be had.
Don't know whether it's this swell, or the sand, but tide height is a very very important factor there at the moment.
I am certainly happy to be proven wrong, I would definitely have a crack.
Good on ya Dave, I’ll keep an eye on it today, I’m sure it has its moments when it pumps. Hope you’re getting a few
You're onto it Dave.
Tide and sand plays a big part on the whole setup. Early on there was a sand buildup between the wedge and suck that Craig observed above, but it's getting moved pretty quick with this swell and the sweep.
We get a lot of people travel up from the Sunny Coast on these swells and well as the Bundy crew and Rocky also. A heap of newbie's have moved up from the SC during COVID too which is adding to the mix.
Super fun this arvo.
Almost all over, red rover.
