Inaugural Gromtag Australian Series heads to D’Bah

Boardriding clubs from all over Queensland and Northern NSW will have the opportunity to compete for an Under-18s Australian Title for the first time with the Sydney-based Gromtag event expanding into a national series.

The Perfect Wave Travel QLD and Northern NSW Gromtag Qualifier is set to be held at Duranbah Beach on Saturday with the top four teams advancing to the Gromtag Australian Championships, scheduled for Curl Curl Beach, Sydney 24th November.

Over fifty boardriding clubs are expected to compete for the inaugural Gromtag Australian Title with $15,000 prize money on offer. Snapper Rocks Surfriders, Palm Beach, Le-Ba, Burleigh Heads, and WindanSea Boardriders are amongst the twelve teams competing this weekend with Kingscliff Boardriders making the most of the event entering two teams.

Global Surftag Managing Director Steve Harrison is looking forward to running the first ever Gromtag event at Duranbah Beach. “I’m really excited to be expanding Gromtag into a National Series and include all the Boardriding Clubs from around Australia”, Harrison said. “With so many great junior surfers in the area it’s a big opportunity for them to represent their local Boardriding Club and this being the first ever Gromtag held in the region it will be interesting to see who qualifies to Aussies”.

With the top five junior surfers representing each boardriding club the series will see all types of surfers hitting the waves with the countries best juniors surfing alongside and against the next crop of underground grommets.

Archy Bemrose

Sixteen-year-old Kingscliff surfer Archy Bemrose is gearing up for a big week. “Tag team is the best form of competitive surfing as you’re in a team with your mates, and I love surfing for Kingscliff in these types of events”, Bemrose said. “We are having a few training runs this week to sort out the team which will be fun to get all the boys together. Snapper Rocks are probably going to be the team to beat on the day but anything is possible in team events and all the clubs competing will be wanting to qualify to Sydney”.

Bemrose’s father Elliot and uncle Matt know a thing or two about tag team surfing, winning the NSW Surftag Title with Curl Curl Boardriders in 2001 and 2006.

Competition will begin at 8.00am on Saturday at Duranbah Beach with the Final scheduled for 3.00pm, which will be followed by the presentation at Beach Burrito Coolangatta.
