Drift is the new Australian surf film set in the early seventies that follows two brothers who lay the foundation of the modern surf industry. Drift is a fictional company name but it sums up the freewheeling spirit of the era. At around the same time many real surf companies were getting started and they also chose names belonging to the age. Rip Curl began as Rip Curl Hot Dog. "The words didn't mean anything," Rip Curl founder Doug Warbrick said "Except ripping was groovy; surfing the curl was groovy; we wanted to be groovy — so that was it."

Other groovy names appeared: Hot Buttered, Crystal Cylinders, Golden Breed. Even the filmamkers got into it: Witzig with Sea of Joy, Falzon with Morning of the Earth, Greenough with Crystal Voyager. All groovy, all herbal, alright.
