Swellnet Analysis

Easter is many things to many people: Resurrection for the believers, hot-cross buns and chocolate for the sweet of tooth, and for surfers, it means a few miles on the highway in the hope of scoring good waves. With a sweet Easter forecast there's no excuse not to add some waves to the diet.

Nearly every nook and cranny of the country is set to see excellent surf at some stage during this Easter long weekend. Here's a quick run down of what to expect across your region out in the water:

South Australia, Victoria, Tasmania

There'll be no shortage of swell across the Southern states from today onwards. A strong progression of frontal systems have produced a series of large groundswells. The first is currently filling in across South Australia, Victoria and Tasmania, with a second pulse expected during Saturday ahead of a third on Sunday afternoon.

Westerly winds will favour protected locations during Friday and Saturday, but a swing around to the north-east during Sunday, Monday and Tuesday should open up the exposed reef breaks for business for experienced surfers.

New South Wales

The East Coast will start off slow with small levels of southerly swell filling in on Saturday and Sunday. Monday looks to offer the best waves with a strong southerly groundswell arriving. Winds will be light during the morning so this will be the best time to surf.

Queensland

South-east Queensland won't fare quite as well as the rest of the country. A short-range south-east swell will build from Sunday onwards, but you'll have to work around a fresh and gusty south-easterly airstream. The protected points are expected to offer the best waves.

Western Australia

Mixed conditions are expected initially in Western Australia with medium levels of swell and onshore winds, but Tuesday is shaping up to deliver a strong and powerful south-westerly groundswell as winds tend variable during the morning. Offshore reefs and bombies are expected to produce some very large waves in the 15 foot range. It may be worth just heading down the coast to sit and watch the surf from the safety of the shore all day.

So it's looking like a great Easter weekend of surf around the country, but remember to drive safe and don't paddle out into conditions you are unfamiliar or uncomfortable with. //CRAIG BROKENSHA
