Watch: Dylan Graves // Skookumchuck Narrows
Dylan Graves continues his magical mystery tour of weird and unlikely waves. This time landing in British Columbia, Canada, to surf the Skookumchuck Narrows.
At 'Skook', three inlets, carrying a total of 200,000 000 billion litres of water, combine then are squeezed through a narrow strait. The wave rises and falls with the tide phases.

200,000,000 Billion Litres is a lot of water.
I can only picture amounts like that in beer.
Converted to Kegs, Cartons and Schooners that's ... well,,, that's a lot of piss.
Apparently 200,000,000 billion litres is equal to 400,000 sydharbs - which I didn't even know was a unit of measurement.
So the Skook has the equivalent volume of 400,000 Sydney Harbours drain through it twice a day.
Doesn't seem right..?
The graphics in the video appear incorrect.
Dylan says in the voice over......."200 Billion litres...."
Nick sounds like an ex-pat Aussie to me....???
Few years back Surfrider Australia released a book authored by Michael Legge-Wilkinson. The surname can't be that common. Have to think they're related.
Naaah, something's off there. Here's wikipedia's estimate: "Each day, tides force large amounts of seawater through the narrows—760,000,000 m3"
Fwiw, Raglan Harbour on the bigger tides has a 100.000.000m3 tidal flow.
Are we talking "US" or "European" billions here? 1 000 000 000 (US) or 1 000 000 000 000 (EU)?
1000 L to the m3 blah blah blah...
Sorry.
Carry on.
Cool wave.
Another cracking vid.
He's a very good host (and more), isn't he
.
liked that a lot. (how many olympic pools in a sydharb?)
I'm currently living 4hrs from the coast so whenever I take the kayak out on the local river I dream of this. Something I didn't know, I was in Chicago a couple of months back and they actually surf the great lakes.
Check out this one if you haven’t seen it Spud. Great clip. https://m.
Cheers Bnkref. I wish it was like when I was there. Unfortunately I was up that way the wrong time of the year to be catching waves. But it's got me pumped to go back now. We were on Lake Michigan, absolutely massive body of water. Living on the coast all my life, the strangest thing for me was looking out to the horizon and not smelling the salt water.
Always interesting to watch his stuff and he seems to be a good bloke
And good surfer
Did he not say gallons, which would be 3.785 more litres? And Nick the local has an Oz accent?
Yeah, Aussie accent.

I should have read above- gedsta beat me to it!
Has to be related to my mate Mike Legge-Wilkinson (also a handy surfer).
Was interesting to see what the kayakers did on that wave- lots of weird tricks- there was no "surf" style apparent at all.
Builds for the Skook
That first board must be the inter-system child of mixed futures and fcs parents. Luckily the fcs gene expressed in the centre finbox placement and symmetry was maintained!
Loved Dylan's nervousness of doing the tour, and then when it happened it didn't seem so bad and he almost enjoyed it.
That whirlpool gave me chills!
