Some waves you've seen before, many you wouldn't have, but regardless if it's the first time or thirty-first time, Tim's footage from last Thursday at Cloudbreak is worth your while.
Absolutely epic. Thanks Tim.
That very outside ledge when a huge one rears up on it has to rate as one of the wonders of the world.
Incredible.

Loved it. Good long interviews, letting the surfers pour their emotions out a bit.
Benji Brand seemed to be almost toying with his waves. Next time he'll be (the) one to watch.

Benji's compact style of charging critical waves definitely puts him up in terms of best goofy barrel riders. Considering that was his first time surfing Cloudies too, all the more impressive!

I have always wondered about the financial cost of a mission like this. What would the total cost be to fly over solely for a single day of surfing, 2 nights at Tavarua, boat and driver cost etc, etc? Incidentally check out the footage of Nate's wave from his tail camera on his Youtube clip, mind blowing.

6 day budget strike mission cost $2500 in September last year. Staying at Tavarua costs $1000/per night, plus $150/per day for boat trip to reef.
The budget trip was worth it for the standup drainers. Although there were only a few good surfers there at the time because Google execs rented Tavarua isalnd and couldn't/wouldn't surf waves over 3 foot.
Initially a hard wave to barrel ride (deep) even for experienced surfers. Spent three days straight surfing alone at the end section (Shishkebabs) until I cracked the technique.

Stayed on Tavarua a few years ago under the guise of a 'work' trip so it was paid for by the company. Don't get me wrong, not a lot of people get a free trip there and it's a lovely place but wouldn't go near it with a barge pole if I had to pay. Accommodation was average given the price, the food was absolute rubbish, seriously lousy (had dinner at Nomotu one night & it was fantasic) and the cost of every little extra was ridiculous. That said, the staff were great and the waves insane. Next time I'd stay somewhere else and get an early boat.

Next level surfing and wipe outs.
Anyone know what size boards the crew were riding?

Always enjoyable watching a naturally gifted surfer like Jai effortlessly surf epic waves

Finally Tim let's the waves and surfing showcase with some nice raw footage and a minimum of hypersensationalism... still the rave and hollywood muzak at times (but hey each to their own) and I noticed he still couldn't resist his narcissistic tendencies but thankfully this too was at a minimum... an excellent overall effort at last... 4 and a half stars.

Music was terrible, footage great. Perhaps someone else could be brought in to cut some different music to Tim’s generally great footage, as musics always jarring.

I hear ya man... hopefully Tim does too
harrycooprWednesday, 13 Mar 2024 at 10:09pm
Oh and those wipeouts... no wonder some of those wetties looked like Batman suits!

Amazing session captured by Tim.
Still scope to get into some of those huge ones 50 metres in further - someone will do it one day.

I watched from 14:00 quite a number of times, Parker Coffin.
The lifetime of effort it takes to put yourself in that position, where a hundred small decisions in a handful of seconds, can get you an experience like that, with chargers looking on. shit. sympathetically filmed and edited, really grabbed me. that'll do me for an appreciative watch. Cheers, Tim Bonython.

This was excellent. Thoroughly enjoyed, thank you.
Is it rude to say that the Cloudy barrel looks 'almondy' at times? Certainly takes a bit of thinking and skill to stay high. This swell looked interesting in that you really had to be in the pocket to be in the barrel on a lot of them. It looked like you could easily be pushed out onto that endless big blue mountain of a shoulder.
Looked like some proper average joes mixing it up there also (they might not have been but they looked that way).
I was really impressed by the Coffin brothers.

Tim’s coverage was way better than one I saw on a rival site, the lead up , the drone shots, the music, the different perspectives, the after wave shots, the interviews, great job !
