Watch: Tim Bonython // Wind And Water - Part 1
Taking a break from documenting Nazare, Tim recently shot south across the Atlantic, landing in Lanzarote, part of the Canary Islands Spanish protectorate, though offshore from Morocco.
Close enough to feel the Harmattan winds blowing off the Sahara, but far enough offshore to dodge the continental shelf, the Canaries are in a sweet spot for swell and wind.
Here, Tim chases a large swell and hooks up with Canaries local Laura Coviella for a session at a perfect peak offshore from La Santa.
Expect a few ads (this is Tim's video and not made by Swellnet) the odd spot of slo-mo (ho ho ho) and music you may not choose yourself.

and typically the local surfers are the biggest mob of arseholes you will ever meet in your life
Beautiful wave. Nice vid.
Cannot recommend the canaries. The waves are good, but the locals have long been sick of euro tourists drinking and puking and fighting all over the island. in and out the water the vibe is wretched.
In fairness, how many places fire in the southern Hemisphere summer and don't have grumpy locals? Honest question, I'd love suggestions for a new summer location that isn't burger central, super inconsistent, stupidly crowded or wildly expensive.
Offseason beachies in Mexico, perfect offshore in the morning and still plenty of power unless you're Nathan Florence or northern facing coastlines in South America for two options. Caribbean gets decent as well.
Great film, the music and the slow mo worked for me, it let me just watch the surfing.
yeh, me too, the wind sounds and cut-aways set up island-pace nicely
Though that was pretty good didn't mind the music, knew couple of Aussies who put some time into the Canaries early 80's they said then the locals could be full on.
Travelled there many years ago and was harassed and abused by the locals .They dont like outsiders - END OF STORY
What an awesome set up, ...Lakey Peak on steroids!
Great viewing thanks Tim.
Cant say I've been to Lanzarote, but have spent a substantial bit of time on GC and Fuerteventura. Lone traveler, surfed quiet spots and met some locals who were very very cool and hospitable. They put me onto their good mates on Fuerte who took me in as one of their own, called me int waves at heavy localised spots in the south. Also growled at anyone else dare paddle out. There's two sides the locals there and I might of lucked out or just being humble, friendly and authentic pays off. And don't travel in packs.
Mind you I'd love to surf El Cameo but the vibe does put me off.
Great stuff Tim.
Nice little edit. If the locals are really that heavy Tim must have been as welcome as a turd in a swimming pool. Then again, most locals don't mind as long as they are in the clip.
I am surprised to see so much head gear. Either a very safety conscientious surfing community, or a very dangerous bottom on that particular break.
Lava pinnacles ; a gun local died there from head injury a couple'a years back
One of Tim's better clips, no hype, great surfing, chilled music.
More like this please
nice edit Tim
Thanks Tim - great memories from a trip there in the late eighties
You captured it well and it looks pretty unchanged - few more people, helmets weren't a thing back then and I would say its a good thing they are now... the place was BRUTAL on my feet like no other place on earth I've been (no booties and v sharp black lava rock on sketchy entry and exits) ... the island feels exposed and beuatiful. Few more modern looking condo's on that side of the island by the looks of it now - at least they're white, somewhat in keeping.
The locals were in no rush to welcome us back then but we gave them plenty of space and stayed for a month and they softened towards us. They were loco on the slabbier waves ... some were great surfers and others made up for it with a no-self-preservation attitude. They would come up cackling with laughter after v severe floggings and that seemed another good reason to start respectfully on the shoulder and gradually over time get bolder
so... good memories - thanks
I found the solution was watching in 2x speed and even then a few still too slow
Love his work but the slow mo kills me everytime….. maybe I need to smoke pot or something
Yeah me too you have no idea of the speed and power.
It’s a pretty cool island to check out. Scored some good waves, but I never did get the Euro pipe on the African continent.
