Watch: John John // The Day Before Yesterday
A large swell from an unusual direction scatters the North Shore's usually recognisable lineups. Instinct and fast-twitch reactions are the key to threading what's essentially a lucky dip and John John has each quality in spades.
"We love a good north swell! These have become my favourite days to surf at home," says John, whose takeoff at 3:50 deserves multiple viewings.
All footage filmed on Sunday with a 10-12ft swell from the north-northeast.

2:15 turn and 3:50 keg .. wow .. can watch jjf all day ..
Looks like the body and the knees are holdng up
Where's the break ?
Is it Backdoor....
Mainly Log Cabins though it looks like there's some Backdoor in there.
OMG...he actually falls off?
To be that guy: did the turns just look a little, off?
Did he flub a couple of them? (2.10)
Knees will be fine as long as he stays on the face.
That wave was big and powerful. Not many (if any) could hold a line through a turn like that.
He goes ok I guess.
Yeh but could he handle Noosa ?
I was gunna be that guy, but thought I was being a cynical grump :-)
maybe first big swell of the Season? Cobweb dusting? Still looking pretty handy. Robbo v JJF v Medina I'm looking forward to.
His surfing looked great, as usual. Just thought it looked like he was nursing his knee a little; didn't quite manage to hold that rail.
Yeh, me three! John John and Gabby winning Qualifying series events after injuries are in great form for next season!!
Agreed. Wonder, too, if it's the relaxed edit that allows those ever-so-slightly off moments to show. And maybe that angle swell makes it a wee bit harder for surfers to find their usual lines – perhaps why JJF enjoys the puzzle etc.
That was the biggest turn I have seen in a very long time....and I think his recovery from a 16 Gs turn was beyond incredible. Like someone mentioned, I don't think many would have got halfway through that turn. Imagine what that would have looked like in Real-life...
Ffaaaarrk.....God I would love to be that comfortable in that size and power. Makes it look like a 3-4ft summer beach break. I guess it helps surfing that stuff from age 5....
That fall at 2:15 ish would leave with a week long headache and have me heaving onto the beach in a dribbling mess!
That drop was pretty intense...the bottom underneath Logs is not nice
wave at 3.15 was pure style perfection
Love this time of year when JJ drops regular clips
He looks bigger
I'm surprised I recognised it as Log Cabins immediately. Isn't it funny how water colour, angles, distance from beach and of course waves (although it could look like any random b-grade beach/reef on a good day) can trigger the wave recognition no matter how tenuous the evidence?
that last big drop to barrel thread was impressive!
My knee hurts watching … and my right shoulder…. Fuck I think I’m getting old
Unedited. An hour at Pipe with JJF and a roll call of heavies. Filmed Wednesday morning.
1:07 that Reverse DuckDive..
