Maps of Home featuring John John Florence
The summary is short and sweet.
"Maps of Home is a short film shot on location on the North Shore of Oahu, between January and March 2021."
The waves are incredible, the surfing is off the hook.
Ain't any more justice I can do with my limited vocabulary, so crack the top off a frosty one, settle in and enjoy twenty-one minutes of the best vision you'll see this weekend.

that was sick
Holy shit.
Please Huey, if you’re listening, let Gabriel Medina watch this movie and wake up in a cold sweat determined to match John John’s rail turns.
You know he will. Match them, that is; not the cold sweat part.
Great video.
From what I have seen the last few years, John John's carve game is so far above everyone's. Gabe doesn't even come close imho, The only other people coming close to the speed he generates through his carves are Toledo and Ewing.
*A Reminder that surfing is subjective, and so is my opinion. :)
Fully agree on the subjective part.
I do think that JJF and Medina are way above all the others. JJF probably better in big waves, and Medina probably better in junky stuff and hollow lefts. Probably.
And my comment was mostly about how relaxed and unfazed Medina is this year, hence not fretting.
Really hope we get to see some fireworks.
It would be good to see those two finally having a proper go head to head against each other. Like an Andy & Slater rivalry.
Oh and btw, that first section in JJF new clip, I’d call that a hollow left yeah? ;-0 haha
Needless to say, JJF is no slouch at Pipe :-)
Still stand by my 'probable' statement above. And it was aimed at comp performance.
They are so so good, both of them, so was trying to separate them.
Just taking the piss IB, I get what you’re saying. Looking forward to watching both of them this comp
I know, and it's all good. Hence the smiley.
This should be, hopefully will be, epic.
Would be good if they had a rivalry, but I don't reckon they are that evenly matched. I personally feel JJF is the better surfer, but Medina is a competitive machine on another level, in good waves and bad. With Slater and Andy we had 2 surfers who were both equally competitive and hungry to win.
Filmed over a typical Oahu weekend.
Nice work if you can get it.
Love the anticipation of the guy in the front row at 2:00
Does anyone else think that might be Kelly?
Wild vid ..watched a dozen times already !! Just cant get enough ..
yep
How many others from the top 32 actively chase huge waves when they are not competing ?Only a couple I reckon. Does anyone read the wave and look as relaxed in big waves as he does?
Kinda explains his disinterest in sub-mental waves, when that's what you're used to as the norm. Compare that with the average muck the likes of Italo and Gabby have as their daily fair, the reason they are such competitive froth monsters.
Well that explains pretty bloody well how Margies is just another day out for young John John Florence...
This deserves to be watched on as big a screen as you can find.
That is mind-blowing surfing.
Imagine anyone on here just got ONE of those Pipe waves. Wave of a lifetime and he's just got 50+. Fuck me
And the intro section on that huge outer reef left is so nuts i cant even half begin to imagine what one of those waves would feel like.
He is the best, no one comes close
Cant wait to watch JJF and Robbo at hopefully big clean margs tomorrow
he's taken it to a whole new level.
The guy really doesn’t need the tour.
Stay at home for 5-6 months and dominate some of the best and most challenging waves on the planet. Go sailing and surf South Pac through his summer.
Good bloke to boot.
Heavy shredding! Hope his knee holds up.

JJF is the best. No one close.
just went on my playlist

Not even sure who these guys are, but I like the vibe.
JJF is just a humble young man and a pleasure to watch surfing.
Not to take anything away from the mind-blowing surfing but that was some mighty fine blues fiddle too.
After Margret River , there is only Chopes this year for JJF to show his ability . I'd predict a Brazilian world champ this year . So freakin ho-hum .
IMO , JJF is way ahead on overall style and surfing ability . Not to mention he appears to be a good fella .
Thanks Swellnet , Those bombs in the opening few minutes at Phantoms are etched in my mind.
He'll be in the top 5 which is all you need, but unfortunately the decider is at trestles.
Aaahhhh....at 5:28 this reflex unstoppable groan of awe and appreciation escape me.....that is just art....
Bloody Brilliant
blocked off SAT to watch this on repeat for at least 10 hours
also calling best day at Himalayas ever
How’s the footage of him at the outer reef as the fins lose their bite and the board starts to drift- even though this eventually undoes him on one wave I think he rides away from another - the composure in that situation is intense...
And was the bouy reading ‘22 at 17’. I guess that’s 22 feet - so a 7 metre swell at 17 seconds ...
I paddled it at 3.4 at 16 recently and got sent packing with a busted board, nit a wave ridden and what I would call a 10-15 monster catch me inside and break on my head ... I just cannot imagine putting myself anywhere near that wave in the opening section - AWESOME
It’s seriously as good as it gets isn’t it. Unbelievable.
What board were you on out there NDC? Do you paddle out off the beach at Sunset?
Nooo... that was South Coast of NSW and I was heftily undergunned on a 6'0 as I was holidaying with my wife and kids. At the (beyond the?) extremes of my abilities and not a patch on that kind of hawaiin juice
Gotcha
Fuck a duck, that's got to be the new benchmark. Superb.
Yep. Might just be the best surfing I've ever seen.
Just beautiful.
I have to wonder, after watching that pigdog into the unmakeable pit at that bluebird Hawaiian outer reef day, has anyone else on the planet actually experienced what this fella has? To that critical degree with that level of calm. Unreal.
Would have been so sick if they had HD footage from the channel of that day at Cloudbreak back when they called the comp off. JJF makes the world tour look irrelevant.
How I mentally surf the wave( dreaming) .. jjf actually surfs it the kid is freak 1ft -30ft his turns are mind blowing.. seems like a top bloke too .. not a flog
That spit through his arms at the end !!
We're being spoilt on the reels today. First Lost Track Ep 2, now an extended cut of JJF's Maps of Home, including many unssen waves from that big session.
Even better this time.
