Heavy water, raw energy and Mikey Wright charging straight into oblivion on O'ahu. This video will get you pumped to pull into those heavier sections over the coming months.
Psycho edit. I can't get over those sketchy takeoffs into menacing closeouts. Don't think I'd survive one, let alone 4-5 consecutive thrashings like Mikey.

Same board and shorts thru out? Or has he multiple of each?
Ben HardingTuesday, 27 Apr 2021 at 4:29pm
Yep, refreshing to see this style of surfing after the last couple months. What Mikey lacks in competitive nous or CT aerial trickery, he more than makes up for in courage and willingness to huck himself over some psycho ledges to pull into some hefty toobs, and lay his rail on some steep sections. Last half of the edit was particularly epic.

Modern Aussie mongrel.....and I luv it!
Up'your's attitude, again.....luv it!

Wow, I saw Mikey on the broadcast of the Straddie comp and he was doing these mad forehand takeoffs into waves that looked unmakeable - and making them. Same here only bigger and more critical. Liked the tunes, especially the 2nd part.
And yeah I got a bit of an MP vignette from the vid. Epic.
tangoTuesday, 27 Apr 2021 at 7:13pm
Love to see a bit of Animal.
And no airs. How nice.
I'll go out on a limb and note the hype around Bells/Winki last week compared to these waves.
goofyfootTuesday, 27 Apr 2021 at 7:26pm
only lasted 2:30 before i tuned out, not a fan.
t-diddyTuesday, 27 Apr 2021 at 7:31pm
I think we can agree that is charging
billieTuesday, 27 Apr 2021 at 7:54pm
That was SSSSSOOOOOO sick. I loved it all.
freeride76Tuesday, 27 Apr 2021 at 8:00pm
good edit but super limited repertoire.
SolitudeTuesday, 27 Apr 2021 at 8:31pm
My thoughts exactly. I get tired of the harsh cutback / down into white water. No flow. Be nice to see something else other than a layback also, that goes for his sister too.
Ben HardingTuesday, 27 Apr 2021 at 9:38pm
Tough crowd but yeah agree, the grab rail cutty does get old. The third reef showing was what it was all about i reckon.
Watched this years ago and couldn't believe it, watched it again tonight and still just as impressed. Bit of waffle but the surfing is full throttle. No hand backside DOH barrels on a twinny towards the end too:
HoodieTuesday, 27 Apr 2021 at 8:13pm
I think the first 3 minutes was the same two closeout waves. Not sure.
Island BayWednesday, 28 Apr 2021 at 9:37am
I'm with goofyfoot. Not a fan.
While Mikey is a beast at charging big barrels, I find his rail surfing painful to watch.
Maybe he should start doing lots of squats and deadlifts.
SunnysideupWednesday, 28 Apr 2021 at 4:10pm
lost interest few minutes in.
Brian from BrissyWednesday, 28 Apr 2021 at 8:39pm
After watching the last two WSL contests, it appears he has to mix up his game plan in beachies... After watching this heavy reef beast mode, I suspect a few naysayers will fall silent after WA.. Keep charging son!!!
Ben HardingWednesday, 28 Apr 2021 at 9:07pm
Yeah suprised by the commentary. A 24 year old kid laying it down harder in free surfs than any other Aussie on the north shore (and by the looks anyone else on the CT bar JJF,) and crew still arent happy with it. This type of charging was once nationally celebrated, but now diminished as not good enough for the tour, strange times indeed. The top two big dogs cant really be touched, but unfortunately they are the yardstick all are judged upon.
goofyfootWednesday, 28 Apr 2021 at 9:11pm
I didn’t make it to the charging section tbh, maybe he should of put that in his clip first? Then those awkward looking cutdown hack things (not sure what to call them) after the big wave gear.
Ben HardingWednesday, 28 Apr 2021 at 9:16pm
best wave of the edit was a backdoor bomb goofy, very last wave. Biggest backdoor wave I seen all winter. Seriously solid. I watched a hella of alot of footy over the summer and that easily stands out for me. But yeah with the edit I think he was going for the crescendo effect.
goofyfootWednesday, 28 Apr 2021 at 9:24pm
I’ll check it out
JonoWednesday, 28 Apr 2021 at 9:32pm
I completely missed that wave, that was huge. Should have opened with that, crescendo effect not as strong in the age of quick edits.
Ben HardingWednesday, 28 Apr 2021 at 9:44pm
Agree. Instagram has a lot to do with that. Psycho wave tho. Gotta be up there for him surely.
SolitudeWednesday, 28 Apr 2021 at 9:19pm
He charges, of course, no one would deny that. I’d say Jack Robbo and possibly Ethan go just as hard though just more precise, more calculated.
In the edits I’ve seen Mikey seems super wreckless. Does not look like a recipe for a long and prosperous career.
Ben HardingWednesday, 28 Apr 2021 at 9:29pm
Yeah robbo for sure, but I more meant the winter gone. Ethan Im not so sold on when it gets seriously solid as we just havent seen enough of him when its sizey.
Mikey pushes the envelope for sure, but then again, thats progression, ala Noa, Shaun Manners, Dino, Kerby, Bierke. Maybe mikey is better of doing what those boys do over competing...
SolitudeWednesday, 28 Apr 2021 at 9:32pm
Know what you’re saying about Ethan but he sure looked like his was toying with solid Haleiwa and Sunset to me. I’m sure with more time he’d settle into backdoor just fine.
Yeah Mikey has his own thing going. Good luck to him.
Brian from BrissyThursday, 29 Apr 2021 at 7:21am
Margaret's will sort all this out.. watch the cream rise to the top.. the aussies will put on a great show
SunnysideupThursday, 29 Apr 2021 at 8:03am
didnt make it to the charging section first round. solid charging.
freeride76Thursday, 29 Apr 2021 at 8:41am
Solid forecast for Margies, here's hoping he can step up and put on a show.
As Solitiude alluded to, can't afford to be reckless in a 30 minute heat.
he needs to make the wave.
batfinkThursday, 29 Apr 2021 at 9:54am
Tough crowd, for sure. Definitely a charger but you’d want to be at the Wright family. Would be hard turning up for dinner if you didn’t go.
Get rid of the mullet Mike.
dean maddisonThursday, 29 Apr 2021 at 5:38pm
I think Mikey should maybe go the slab / big wave scene, lots a guts, good in the barrel, heavy on the rail. Gotta lot of MP in that style. Probably needs variety to stay in the CT on a long term basis. Rips none the less.
Bubble elderThursday, 29 Apr 2021 at 9:07pm
I loved it. Give me that any day over the airs and grovelling... I'd seen that backdoor wave and was very impressed, it's certainly put into perspective when you see how many floggings he took to in that same session. Certainly not one to hold back and I hope he goes a long way in WA
frogFriday, 30 Apr 2021 at 1:19pm
Those big slashes would feel great to do. I have often spent sessions (in much smaller waves) with a predictable great open face following a fast section just doing big cut back slashes for the pure g force feel - never caring who saw (often nobody) or that it was repetitive. One of the best feelings in surfing.
I just don't get the chance too often. Maybe Mikey was feeling the same and enjoying not having to "score points for variety". Perhaps the edit was too long - a few less carves and the peanut gallery would have still been in the "ooooh ahhhh" phase.
