Watch: Hearts ablaze in Hawaii
OK, a couple of things before launching into this clip.
The waves are incredible and well worth your attention, however if liberal use of slo-mo makes you break out in hives then consider running the clip at x2 speed.
Just hit 'settings' in the bottom right corner and increase the playback speed. You'll probably also have to mute the sound as the serious emotional score now sounds more like the Chipmunks in the orchestra pit.

1:40. If you’re gonna pre-claim it, mr casual, then you need to make it
It’s hard to look at Pipe like this and then think of North Narrabeen and Merewether on the pro tour.
3:55, it does not get much better than that.
yep, best wave i've seen in ages.
I wasn't sick of the slo mo by that time, either.
Totally agree - perfect
Nice and happy pipe..enjoyed that ...Thanks.
Even with it sped up 2X it was too slow for my liking. Maybe I'm just a grumpy old man these days, but I fuckin' hate slo-mo.
Agreed. I gave up. The music also doesn't belong imo.
Call me weird and stupid, but I'm no fan of the 'steep drop to arse-stall' Pipe barrels.
Deep and early and drive through it at full speed for my taste.
Roll-ins were nice. Love a good roll-in.
I was thinking the same thing - spending half the wave bogged down on your backside or sticking an arm in the face with no speed might increase your tube time and score in a heat but it removes one of the joys of surfing - pure frictionless speed and acceleration. Maybe not every wave - a pure speed run with no tube is fun too.
I'm all for the arse drag, but purely from a functional point of view - could care less about aesthetics.
In '94 I was travelling through West Java and surfed at Turtles with a guy called Todd who used his arse as a body brake. First time I'd seen it. Having grown up near a left that heaved on takeoff but slowed up down the line, it was a revelation and I worked on it a lot.
At one of the Quik G'Land comps, maybe '96, Shane Beschen was doing it and it was subsequently written about as a new approach he'd pioneered.
Similar things written about JOB at Pipe as a young'un, though in his defence he was the only one applying it in waves of that calibre. Easy to get bucked off the board when scraping your behind at that speed. Also, it's one thing to deftly drag your derriere while travelling in a straight line through Indo glass, another to do it while freefalling into a bottom turn at Pipe.
I prefer the hand/arm drag as opposed to the arse drag in backhand barrels.
Good surf on Valentines Day... reckon that's killed plenty of relationships over the years!
As surfers, we've all been there!
Such a mesmerising wave!
Bold of old mate body surfer to drop in - could end in racing stripes to his arms. Or worse.
8:28.....as good as "the" TC snap?
Not even close to as critical.
Stylish, no doubt, but it's on the end section, unlike TC's.
Love the way he held back though. Ballsy
sssllllloooooowwwww mmmmoooooo.....
ppplllleeaaaassseee ffffuuuuucccckkkkk oooooofffffffff
The slow mo is great. Let’s you catch the detail and subtleties.
I wish it had gone for longer.
Am I the only one who thought there was bugger all cover up time on a fair portion of the waves considering the 'hype' of the swell. Couple of amazing ones mentioned above but it just wasn't hitting the reef at the right angle IMO. Good size tho...
I've noticed that a few of the contributors on this site use a knuckle-drag technique to great effect.
Hahaha yep
Gotta agree about the cover ups- I like to see them disappear. Tho easy to be an armchair critic.
jeez even on double time that was tedious
