Watch: Ian Gouveia // Seeking evolution
Ian Gouveia ain't a name that's likely to draw web traffic, no-one's instinctively clicking in the way they would with a headline featuring John John, Dane, or Kelly. In fact, I could think of a hundred surfers more likely to pique your interest than the former world number 33.
Yet here we are. Here you are.
This vid of IG in the Maldives was passed onto me with the message, "Why didn't he surf like this while on tour?"
After watching it I wondered the same thing, but there's a clue in the title: Buscando a evolução. Portuguese for 'seeking evolution'.
Evolved, he has.

Does he have uncomfortable boardies or is the "clothes adjustment" a new kind of "so composed and cool on an overhead screamer that I will fiddle with my clothing" kind of cool kid claim thing?
Otherwise love his pig-dog speed control. Nice....
"Why didn't he surf like this while on tour?"
Anyone remember the backside belt he did in Rio I think in 2018 in round 3 against Jordy after a very nice tube? Never seen anyone do a turn like that before or since......can surf.
Good memory! Beast of a backside blast.
Yeah he was a beast on tour...surprised he didn't get the accolades of his fellow countrymen. I took footage of him surfing Nth Point when the comp was there and he was incredible...a cut above the other brazzo in the big stuff.
Thinking the same- why didn't he rip like that on tour?
That was some damn fine surfing. And some.
That was very impressive.
Check the backhand roundhouse to snap at 0:45. Seemless, not a bobble in sight.
top notch backside surfing, though his forehand surfing was a little underwhelming for me - not to take away from the skill or explosiveness, but it seemed to lack flow/grace/style.
That's being super critical though - no way I'd ever be able to surf anywhere near as good as that.
Spot on the money @pops. His backhand is mind blowing but that forehand is lacking.
Same as Italo, mind-bending backhand, but lacks style/flow on the forehand.
Yago Dora is my fav Brazilian. Perfect style and flow in any type of waves,...and both forehand and backhand.
