Watch: Torren Martyn // Thank You Mother (excerpt)
Alrighty then...Needessentials have just released a section of last year's 'Thank You Mother', a film made by Torren Martyn, Ishka Folkwell, and Alby Falzon - yes, that Alby Falzon.
Though feature length, 'Thank You Mother' sits comfortably in the Needessentials oeuvre: think stripped back toons, perfect waves, little bit o' slo-mo, and Torren Martyn gliding and projecting on his Simon Jones' twinny.
It's a formula, no doubt about it, but by Christ they do it well.
I've mentioned before how enchanting Torren's forward-shuffled tube style is. He's not the only modern surfer to incorporate it into his act, there's Asher Pacey, Mason Ho, and Jonathon Gubbins - and probably others I can't think of - yet Torren is one of the only surfers doing it backside, and he's defintely the only one doing it backside on a twinny.
The delicate nature of that move simply can't be overestimated.

OK, so for years I have had no desire to surf Indo again, until now...
Jesus, the afrojazz sound track n all
beautiful little film
beautiful surfing. What a delight. Thx Swellnet
Boy thought i could smell the faint whiff of cloves while watching that, very morning of the Earthish....loved it ...seemed different /better than last year? Torrens possibly the best back hand tube rider in the world, certainly top 5.......i was hoping he would stick his 5 pinkies over the nose in that first endless barrel.........small twin too.
Agree simba ...the bestin the world ..def smaller board is better...7.20min serious finger waving
fuck you cunt ? he he.
Geez He goes alright. A cool cat no doubt.
go the twin fins, they rip
so smooth, his head is almost completely still looking down the line
Wow. Locking into that end section like it’s a 2 foot beachie. Stunning display of backhand twin fin surfing, rarely seen.
He's bloody fabulous to watch. Love how he uses his arse as a handbrake from that stance - it's not a pig dog which is so much more stable, but a squat.
He's in that rare league of performance, flow and panache, and it's him, Rasta, Ryan Burch and Bryce Young so far out in front.
Feeling the flow of the wave ..and some tasty moves ..reverse 360s the old style
Key evidence comp surfing has no style..
Holy shit that was a revelation. Backhand tube riding almost facing forward. That was bloody beautiful. Been looking for a stick to reignite the energy after 35 years....that might just be the push I need. Anyone know the board he was on, the one hanging up around the 3 minute mark?
He is very good. I'm going to be the slight contrarian, however, and say that I liked Luke Hynd's Indo twin efforts better.
I enjoyed both very much, hard for me to pick between the two though
He surfs really well, but I think the difference is in the degree of ease - Torren seems a bit more relaxed in the serious parts of the wave and focusses on rail turns, Luke is visibly going flat out when its serious and mixes up snaps and airs. Wish I could surf half as well, though! He's got the gift.
he looks great out on the face...but, that's what counts as good tube riding for you stand-ups?
oh come on, ugly, uncomfortable crouch and barely controlling the board?
someone give the fellow a kneeboard and let him get on with it.
HAHA!!!
Been riding twinnies for a few years on and off. When not on the twin it's a quad.Thrusters are dead to me.Looks as Torryns backhand tube riding has been perfected by dare I say it riding a mal and riding a mal a lot.John Peck would have a tear in his eye....beautiful surfing
John Peck. Of course!
Rock solid reference.
Like you, I'm riding quads in the main with a few recent forays into twinnies. Can't imagine ever riding Thrusters again.
Well that’s a revelation! What took ya so long son and welcome to my world. Who would thought ! Might have to have a celebratory tipple this evening with a wry grin! That’s a rhyme ain’t it! Twin and Grin!!
I thought you were gonna go with wry grin with a dry gin.
Excellent LD put a rye grin on me face that did. Being a Saturday night I was having a full bodied red! Is there a rhyme in that?

So good as is my NeedEssentials wetsuit. These guys are onpoint
FG I bought a twinnie a few months back after eyeballing a Black Baron in the carpark.
Best thing I have done in ages, thrusters have been making me nauseous at the local beachie for ages, the twin is way better. I want a second shorter one now.
Ash I'm getting one made at the moment 7'2 pin twin fin been riding a 6'2 twin last year or so ...went really well in Indo. The longer rail line is gunna feel insane can't wait.
If I could emulate any piece of surfing I've seen in a vid. in the last several years it would be this need clip of Torryn on a short twinny in fun-size peeling point waves
- such flow and rhythm with the wave, never seems to bog or bounce, seamless carves, buckets of spray, an apparent effortless glide across the water - Tim Winton has marvelled at surfing being a dance; ... to be young again, but more importantly talented to be able to dance like TM, this kids got it in spades I reckon
Invested in the full version of "Thank you Mother" truly worth every cent. The above excerpt is a hint of the beauty of the total content.
7'2" for Speedies I'm figuring.
I went 6' for fat and slow here ( worked out well ) and reckon I could get away with 5'9" for good days here and the lefts I surf in Indo on regular to small size days.
JS got it right with bottom contours, rocker, outline and fin placement on the BB
Beautiful flow, unforced surfing...my favourite kind
good to see everyone happy again
there is a good vid of him surfing Java in the rain
Do twinnies go any good on beach breaks?
Been contemplating getting a similar twinny, for a while know. Not many point breaks around here and wondering how they would go on shorter punchier waves.
I'd probably look at boards more in the MR style of twin, maybe the super twin with stabiliser option.
Nothing I can really add to the above, I agree with everything about Torryns surfing, he's amazing to watch.
I might add though, imo thrusters aren't dead and I surf them for the most part and love them. Of course I love to bust out the twin when the right waves present themselves but my go-to is usually a good ol' tri-fin.
Amazing backhand style. I really enjoyed all of the vids that have been put up as further affirmation of this guy's surfing abilities.
I've got a twin w/ stabiliser which is great, but I do struggle with it at pitching, more critical takeoffs compared to a thruster. I presume that is to do with my actual talent.
Are quads the bridge between them? I haven't had much experience with that set up.
Sensational surfing. Sooooooooo smooth. Amazing flow and super stylish. Would have to be some of the fastest backhand surfing I have ever seen too. Beautiful.
