Watch: Manuel Lezcano // Volcanic Surf
Doesn't matter if it's John John Florence or someone you've never heard of....say Manuel Lezcano, watching a surfer dominate their local through sheer mastery is always a pleasure.
This clip is only two minutes long, but it's enough to show the level of intimacy Manuel has with the triangle of volcanic rock abutting his Lanzarote home.

29th January this year. No one on it.
That's amazing (the fact that no one's on it) on a day like that in 2020!
Surfed around Lanzarote in the early 90's. Plenty of volcanic reef waves and even back then some of the unfriendliest local surfers you could find anywhere.
There ya go views...
Short sharp clip, kinda like the wave.
One of the harder lineups to quietly slip into...
surfed there in the 90's - loved it but the whole island scared the shit out of me and my feet were in tatters at the end of a month. That place and Tahiti were the only places I travelled to where I would wake up hoping the surf would be smaller - good memories
Volcanic rock and urchins. Not quite as sharp as Coxos, though.
Did you surf the slab just north of El Quemao, towards Morro Negro?
I was there maybe 15 yrs ago, unfortunately I did not score EQ, but had several sessions at La Santa, that was a fun peak.
I got a foot (both) full of urchin spines after my very first surf there. Straight from the airport to my mate's joint in La Santa with enough time to unpack my boards and then straight to a fairly nearby righthand reef (GT)at 6ft plus. Got so excited I didn't listen to him explaining where you needed to come in and paid for it.
Surfed the slab a handful of times but the local vibe was pretty off putting. First time I was by myself and only 3 of them out and they still gave me a hard time. Ragging me in Spanish was pretty funny when after a minute or 2 I told them what I thought of them in their own 'idioma'. Every time I surfed it Id paddle there and back from La Santa harbour so I didn't have to leave thongs etc on the rocks/reef for the pricks to hide or throw in the ocean.
When I left a month later, I was still digging out bits of spine in my feet with a sewing needle.
A couple of times on the slab but it’ll was a bit much for me... I got a good barrel the second session and decided I would quit whil I was ahead ... surfed EQ bigger but whilst still heart in mouth it was more manageable for me on a longer Biard than the slab ... and you?
Best three days of the trip we’re on a neighbouring island - won’t say too much ... 1 day trip turned into 3 - lived off baked beans, slept in board bags ... great stuff
Makes me wonder how many of us on here have crossed paths without knowing it. I lived on Lanza for a year 88-89 and left a mate behind who is still there now with wife and kids. Visited pretty much every year for a few weeks at a time up until I set off here. Met Curren, Hynde and Frankie on one of their Search missions and witnessed Kong surf monsters and then fail in his local business. The list of characters and subsequent stories around that lump of basalt are endless.
Thanks Westof- I’ve been having some technical difficulties.
