Both of those pics are wrong on every level.
Surely all those blokes with their tackle out should be done for indecent exposure to children?
If ya wanna get up to that shite in the privacy of your own dwelling with consenting adults, go nuts, but leave it out of public view, especially with children around.

I know what would happen if they were my kids walking past that filth.

Ha ha. My take on it is different. There ‘progressive left culture’ that so concerns the conservative right would struggle to fill a phone box.

Basically, Australian society is a very small number of activist lefties who really are on the extremes, a small number of right wing nut jobs who remain permanently incandescent railing against mostly imaginings of what ‘teh left’ is up to.

Both of them are just outrage factories who seem to have inordinate amounts of time to spend on social media.

99% of Australians don’t know any crazy progressive lefties, or any right wing nut jobs. Not in person. 99% of Australians carry on there meaningful lives untouched by the nut jobs. They don’t spend a penny of emotional energy on it.

But yeah, feel free to think that the world is dominated by either group, or that your way of life is under substantive attack. Go on, I dare you.

Both photos are wrong and there is no way children should be there, I wouldn’t want to be there, however context is everything. Some countries allow public nudity (Germany?) in certain parks over the summer so I’m wondering whether the events shown in the photos were organised in such environments in which case is criticism of the people/events warranted or should the parents of those kids be castigated instead? I don’t think it’s anything to do with left/right culture wars here at all and to suggest that it is disingenuous

;)

“Surfing is what’s happening.
There’s nothing else for me.
On a red-hot, glassy day of surf I don’t care who stands in my way. I will surf.
Maybe I’ve got to lie, cut out on my job, anything for the moment when the surf is up.
I can’t stay away from it.
Something snaps inside me.
I get diarrhea.
My pulse goes out of control.
Responsibility, society—it can all get lost.
The surf’s up and that’s where you’ll find me.

On the surf scene, evenly staggered waves march around the outside point.
I see my friends paddle frantically.
Three of them stand up and drop into position.
They ride the wave shoreward, and then paddle out to the group.
We sit and talk about close to nothing.
One guy engages me in war conversation.
I see a wave from my periphery, and nervously inch away from the drone of the voice.
The wave builds, leaps high above the horizon.
I stroke down into its belly, stand up, and angle for the shoulder.

The whole thing lets loose, top to bottom, and I am covered by tons of white water.
Blackness engulfs me.
I am 20 feet beneath the surface in a tearing Bendix (sic) of ocean.
My blood oxygen wanes to a critical point.
My ears feel like they will burst from pressure.
And then the worst is over.

The wave has passed me by.
I grapple to the surface and swim shoreward.
I have ridden, been wiped out, and survived another 25-foot Waimea Bay surf.
Where does it end?
I mean, how many times do I have to prove myself out there?
What pushes me?
Why does one surf?

You can accept any reasons you want for why we surf.
You might praise that untouched beauty of the surf itself.
You may say that it makes you feel like something big; it may be the biggest thing you have found to fill your life with meaning. There is nothing like being locked in the face of a wave.
You are so far back in the tube that the wave literally surrounds you.
It is like running through a tunnel.
That’s the essence.” …..

The real problem is with the internet Australia isn't cut off from the rest of the world these days, so what every happens in the USA sooner or latter gets taken up by Australia and UK etc

Yeah its a small fringe group but the influence and ability to change narratives and mindset's and make weird ideas seem normal in time is very real, we see this with all kinds of issues.

You can say the same about the right and culture war crap, but its only a reaction to a small group on the far left trying to push the envelope. (cause and effect)

The real problem is there is no end game for some, it's just a which point do you say argh thats enough, clearly we can all agree the above pic is after that cut off point for all of us............well for now, who knows in ten, twenty, fifty years time.

however, the hyper-sensitive... the hyper-defensive... from within a certain cohort, always, always make it about the so called 'culture wars'...

always just dismiss it, and label it, all about 'culture wars' ...to safe face and / or engage in some form of damage control...

much to the detriment of any and everything else they are trying to advocate and / or facilitate...

it ain't left / right for me, it's calling it for what it is, dumb, degenerate, mindless, religious zealotry...

anti scientific, anti consenus building dogma

anti tolerance... anti a lot of things...

In amongst many societal trends is another subtle theme at work that once you see it you can't unsee it.

The feminisation of men.

Once you look you realise it is everywhere:
- advertising and memes - with endless subtle jokes and messages deriding .... guess who
- advertising and memes - visuals - just look
- fashion
- music
- the language and themes describing acceptable behaviour
- the language and adjectives describing just ordinary behaviour (sausage fest...)
- the language and adjectives describing somewhat other than the newly promoted behaviour (starts with "t")
- subtle demeaning references such as to a husband's joke as being a "Dad joke" - a dumb joke or in overheard workplace chat or post on FB that their husbands are just incompetent (lots and lots of likes to that usually)
- workplace training emphasising one main management / interaction style
etc.

It is pendulum swung too far. Unintentional overreach to some degree. But it also has some powerful beneficiaries behind the scenes.

Not advocating macho stuff but consider standing your ground in the middle where a few million years of evolution has naturally wired you even as the wind blows steadily in one direction.

Following the wind is fine if that is a conscious choice but being swept passively to a place you never intended to be - not so much.

Partners, daughters and sons and your own mental health benefits from a pendulum mostly in the middle balance point.

Feedback sought on new misinformation bill. Big Brother world steps closer. What is "misinformation" ? What is "cause harm" ?

A woke wet dream ? Globalist heaven ? Stifle debate and .... humour

Simple example - lots of humour, satire or funny memes sending up ridiculous stuff in our world could be seen as misinformation. The subject of satire could say it causes harm.

Give them some feedback:

https://www.infrastructure.gov.au/have-your-say

Understanding behind the scenes agendas of certain hard to pin down "change the world groups and people" for the "little people" can be tricky. But they show up most clearly in what new legislation is proposed.

This one may seem innocent in intent but not in practice.

WSL and Elo probably hope it gets passed. Turps style wall of positivity commentary would then be all that is permitted.

Communist censorship and information control, aimed at dismantling and indeed cancelling what remains of the conservative centre-right in Western civilisation - the central agenda of the communist progressive left - slowly creeps up on our once free and open society, lulling us into a stupor of consenting to totalitarian oppression by bracket-creep.

Another example: Australia is currently waging war on Twitter, after it was purchased by Musk and set free of its communist progressive left control, to now become one of the last bastions of free and open speech and debate on planet earth (apart from the swellnet forums):
- Twitter defends its handling of disinformation in Australia
- Australia’s eSafety umpire issues legal warning to Twitter amid rise in online hate
and all led by non other than a previous employee of Twitter:

At Twitter, Julie headed up Public Policy for Australia and South East Asia, managing a range of public policy issues, including online safety and countering violent extremism. Julie also built Twitter’s ‘Rules and Tools’ for safety, and conceptualised and piloted #PositionofStrength, which continues to serve as Twitter’s global female safety and empowerment program.

Australia moves further away from being an open society and Popper is not just rolling but indeed shuddering in his grave:

When Popper wrote The Open Society and Its Enemies, he believed that the social sciences had failed to grasp the significance and the nature of fascism and communism because these sciences were based on what he saw to be faulty epistemology. Totalitarianism forced knowledge to become political which made critical thinking impossible and led to the destruction of knowledge in totalitarian countries.

Popper's theory that knowledge is provisional and fallible implies that society must be open to alternative points of view. An open society is associated with cultural and religious pluralism; it is always open to improvement because knowledge is never completed but always ongoing: "if we wish to remain human, then there is only one way, the way into the open society ... into the unknown, the uncertain and insecure".

In the closed society, claims to certain knowledge and ultimate truth lead to the attempted imposition of one version of reality. Such a society is closed to freedom of thought. In contrast, in an open society each citizen needs to engage in critical thinking, which requires freedom of thought and expression and the cultural and legal institutions that can facilitate this.

Humanitarianism, equality and political freedom are ideally fundamental characteristics of an open society. This was recognized by Pericles, a statesman of the Athenian democracy, in his laudatory funeral oration: "advancement in public life falls to reputation for capacity, class considerations not being allowed to interfere with merit; nor again does poverty bar the way, if a man is able to serve the state, he is not hindered by the obscurity of his condition. The freedom which we enjoy in our government extends also to our ordinary life."

I think you know very well that judgements on information and misinformation can simply depend on for example the time frame in events as new "facts" emerge as well of course the many perspectives of the reader. Covid facts in mid 2019 were very different to those in 2020 for example as data emerged.

Any judgement as to risk and consequence also has a great deal of subjectivity and speculation. In WHS with injury risk situations this can be hard to gauge, let alone for words on paper read by people of all different sensitivity levels and viewpoints.

Imagine a swellnet forum moderator trying to wade through this:

" outlines the matters that are relevant to determining
whether the content could cause or contribute to serious harm:
• the circumstances in which the content is disseminated
• the subject matter of the false, misleading or deceptive information in the content
• the potential reach and speed of the dissemination
• the severity of the potential impacts of the dissemination
• the author of the information
• the purpose of the dissemination
• whether the information has been attributed to a source and, if so, the authority of the source and
whether the attribution is correct
• other related false, misleading or deceptive information disseminated
• any other relevant matter."

Safer just to stop allowing comments. Or have AI edit everything according Joe Turpel positivity standards.

I will submit feedback but I don't think adding a few extra dot points to the definitions will fix them.

Some issues may not have a new law as the solution without lots of unintended consequences. But lawmakers must make more law - the law factory must keep the production line going.

gsco's picture

We saw the communist information control model play out perfectly in covid:

Even in a liberal democracy with mixed market economy:
- control the information and narrative
- classify fact as misinformation, disinformation and propaganda
- censor and suppress inconvenient truths
- character assassinate and cancel dissenting voices, even experts
- echo and spam the same repeated false messages over and over
- infiltrate and collude with social media, including rigging their ranking algorithms
- ...etc...
do all this and you control everything, and can even convince people to accept oppressive communist lockdowns and deprivation of basic liberties and rights, all for no reason.

These and more are all tactics the CCP uses to oppress and subjugate its people. The communist progressive left's mouth is watering at the thought of applying them all to western civilisation, and already does so in most cases.

Remember the recent proclamation of uncle klaus :

- ‘China is a model for many nations’ …

This isn’t the ‘china’ as in the history or the culture, nor a tribute to their academic or economic achievement…

- it is a reference to the astounding growth and ‘success’ of ccp government policy and state controlled propaganda, engineered through not so subtle strategic methods of coercion and force. One might refer to it as an intended application of a playbook for the most effective modern industrial sized display of working authoritarianism ever attempted…

It works if enough slaves sign up to the program, and it’ll keep working if enough sheep are willing to play along and obey the rules.
