One of the best places to find new music is KEXP.
Kiasmos.
Melodic, rhythmic, ambient, remind me a bit of Cluster.
Dakhabrakha.
Love the afro hairdos.
Haelos
Tasteful Allan Watts voice sample at the start.
Thievery Corporation
First and last songs from this set are my favourites, Forgotten people and Culture of Fear
Band of Horses
.
Of monsters and men - Little Talks
Of monsters and men - King and Lionheart.
Jungle
Oz
yeah ive discovered quite a few new bands via KEXP.
Yep, KEXP has an incredible catalogue. Check out the performance by Marc RIBOT's three piece 'Ceramic Dog'. Will blow your minds!!!!!
Awesome song pupkin. Anything Adam Briggs does is great...love his comedy
My favourite KEXP episode Dino JR playing two classics and a Cure song, plus Henry Rollins interviewing as a bonus.
J is obviously an amazing guitarist but Lou is an amazing musician too, the way he plays bass is so unique he approaches it more like a guitar, i think he must do that Hendrix style thing where he still plays one note but mutes the other strings that allows him to just hammer it real hard.
Great lyrics, Balance.
Jan 26th.
[Verse 1: Briggs]
They said, "Hey, Briggs, pick a date" (okay)
"You know, one we can celebrate" (for sure)
"Where we can come together (yeah)
Talk about the weather, call that Australia Day"
I said, "How about March 8th?" (that's a good one)
And we can do it on your Nan's grave (got that, bitch?)
We can piss up, piss on her face
Get lit up and burn out like Mark Skaife
They screaming, "love it or leave it" (love it!)
I got more reason to be here, if you could believe it
Won't salute a constitution or who's underneath it
Turn that flag to a noose, put a cease to your breathing
I can't get in my whip, I get a ticket for that
I get a DWB, and that's a 'Driving Whilst Black'
I turn the other cheek, I get a knife in my back
And I tell 'em it hurts, they say I overreact
So fuck that! (fuck that!)
[Chorus: Dan Sultan & Briggs (Trials)]
You can call it what you want
But it just don't mean a thing
No, it just don't mean a thing
(Hey, Briggs!) Fuck that, homie
You can come and wave your flag
But it don't mean a thing to me
No, it just don't mean a thing
[Verse 2: Trials]
I said celebrate the heretic anytime outside Jan 26 (anytime)
That's the date for them suckers doing that sucker shit (that's true!)
That's that land-taking, flag-waving attitude
Got this new Captain Cook dance to show you how to move (move it)
How you wanna raise a flag with a rifle
To make us want to celebrate anything but survival?
Nah, you watching tele for The Bachelor
But wouldn’t read a book about a fuckload of massacres? (what?)
I remember all the blood and what carried us (I remember)
They remember twenty recipes for lamingtons (yum)
Yeah, their ancestors got a boat ride
Both mine saw them coming until they both died
Fuck celebrating days made of misery (fuck that)
White Aus still got the black history (that's true)
And that shirt will get you banned from the Parliament
If you ain't having a conversation, well then we starting it
[Chorus: Dan Sultan & Briggs]
You can call it what you want
But it just don't mean a thing
No, it just don't mean a thing
Fuck that, homie
You can come and wave your flag
But it don't mean a thing to me
No, it just don't mean a thing!
[Outro: Briggs & Trials]
Wave it, wave it baby
Wave it, wave it, eat the flag
Wave it, wave it mama
Wave that flaggy, wear the flag
Wave it, wave it baby (What you gonna do?!)
Wave it, wave it, wave it baby!
Wave it, wave it mama
Wave that flaggy.

Speaking of lyrics Let us know what you think a great lyric is.I'll start with this.
I'll climb up on the house
weep to water the trees
and when you come calling me down
I'll put on my disease,,,,
Early one mornin’ the sun was shinin’
I was layin’ in bed
Wond’rin’ if she’d changed at all
If her hair was still red
Her folks they said our lives together
Sure was gonna be rough
They never did like Mama’s homemade dress
Papa’s bankbook wasn’t big enough
And I was standin’ on the side of the road
Rain fallin’ on my shoes
Heading out for the East Coast
Lord knows I’ve paid some dues gettin’ through
Tangled up in blue
She was married when we first met
Soon to be divorced
I helped her out of a jam, I guess
But I used a little too much force
We drove that car as far as we could
Abandoned it out West
Split up on a dark sad night
Both agreeing it was best
She turned around to look at me
As I was walkin’ away
I heard her say over my shoulder
“We’ll meet again someday on the avenue”
Tangled up in blue
I had a job in the great north woods
Working as a cook for a spell
But I never did like it all that much
And one day the ax just fell
So I drifted down to New Orleans
Where I happened to be employed
Workin’ for a while on a fishin’ boat
Right outside of Delacroix
But all the while I was alone
The past was close behind
I seen a lot of women
But she never escaped my mind, and I just grew
Tangled up in blue
She was workin’ in a topless place
And I stopped in for a beer
I just kept lookin’ at the side of her face
In the spotlight so clear
And later on as the crowd thinned out
I’s just about to do the same
She was standing there in back of my chair
Said to me, “Don’t I know your name?”
I muttered somethin’ underneath my breath
She studied the lines on my face
I must admit I felt a little uneasy
When she bent down to tie the laces of my shoe
Tangled up in blue
She lit a burner on the stove
And offered me a pipe
“I thought you’d never say hello,” she said
“You look like the silent type”
Then she opened up a book of poems
And handed it to me
Written by an Italian poet
From the thirteenth century
And every one of them words rang true
And glowed like burnin’ coal
Pourin’ off of every page
Like it was written in my soul from me to you
Tangled up in blue
I lived with them on Montague Street
In a basement down the stairs
There was music in the cafés at night
And revolution in the air
Then he started into dealing with slaves
And something inside of him died
She had to sell everything she owned
And froze up inside
And when finally the bottom fell out
I became withdrawn
The only thing I knew how to do
Was to keep on keepin’ on like a bird that flew
Tangled up in blue
So now I’m goin’ back again
I got to get to her somehow
All the people we used to know
They’re an illusion to me now
Some are mathematicians
Some are carpenters’ wives
Don’t know how it all got started
I don’t know what they’re doin’ with their lives
But me, I’m still on the road
Headin’ for another joint
We always did feel the same
We just saw it from a different point of view
Tangled up in blue
Lonely, lonely , lonely
Lonely is a man without love
You don't get any second chance
When the push comes to shove
My life lately has been clouded by fog
I should be happy as a king
But I'm sick, sick as a dog
The drill bit lodged in my skull
Causes me no small amount of pain
But as I recall life without it
Was really much the same
If it weren't for this thing
Then there'd be just some other thing
I've learned that life shits hardest
On a man who would be king
The long arm of the law why it does not wear any glove
Lonely, lonely, lonely, lonely
Is a man without love
Every day I wake up
I shit, I shower and shave
Then I go and I break up
I'm necessities slave
Kiss my ass, it's a fact
Lonely is a man without love
The shit's hitting harder now
Hard as the balled fist of love.
"Every day I wake up, then I start to break up
Lonely is a man without love
Every day I start out, then I cry my heart out
Lonely is a man without love..."
One of the biggest songs in the history of songs.
And for the last 30 years I thought it was “split up on the docks at night”.
Reckon it fits well anyway.
"The Durango '95 purred away a real horrorshow - a nice, warm vibraty feeling all through your guttiwuts. And soon it was trees and dark, my brothers, with real country dark."
"reversing down lonely street". the libertines
Ha,
Ha, ha, ha
Yo, I'll tell you what I want, what I really, really want
So tell me what you want, what you really, really want
I'll tell you what I want, what I really, really want
So tell me what you want, what you really, really want
I wanna, I wanna, I wanna, I wanna
I wanna really, really, really wanna zig-a-zig ah.
Genius!
Spare me Zen. Worked clubs through that era. OK, name this song:
Not gonna get you a diamond ring
That sort of gift don't mean anything
Not gonna get you a fancy car
Girl ya gotta know you're my shining star
Not gonna get you a house in the hills
A girl like you needs somethin' real
Come on VJ, you KNOW there was a better song than that by the same group...
Is it a Christmas song VJ?
I think i'd just prefer a card if it's all the same to you.
I've always liked the lyrics to this song. Not deep, not profound but open to interpretation.
Many people tell you that they're your friend
You believe them
You need them
For what's round the river bend
Make sure that you're receiving the signals they send
'Cos brother, you've only got two hands to lend.
The first known performance of 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' replete with different lyrics and song structure, filmed five months before they recorded Nevermind.
Probably the last time he had to intro the song: "This song is called 'Smells Like Teen Spirit'".
Also, probably the last time the audience didn't react to that.
Glockenspiel, bongos, Mosrite with missing strings and weird tuning, go-go dancing, massive beehive hairdos, but visceral performance and punk as heck. B52s at their finest.

Taking the eldest little bloke to his first gig tonight
Some of the greatest simplistic lyrics.Worth watching for the girl on the drum's put's a smile on your dial.
Well, my friends are gone and my hair is grey
I ache in the places where I used to play
And I'm crazy for love but I'm not coming on
I'm just paying my rent every day in the Tower of Song
I said to Hank Williams, how lonely does it get?
Hank Williams hasn't answered yet
But I hear him coughing all night long
Oh, a hundred floors above me in the Tower of Song
I was born like this, I had no choice
I was born with the gift of a golden voice
And twenty-seven angels from the Great Beyond
They tied me to this table right here in the Tower of Song
So you can stick your little pins in that voodoo doll
I'm very sorry, baby, doesn't look like me at all
I'm standing by the window where the light is strong
Ah, they don't let a woman kill you, not in the Tower of Song
Now, you can say that I've grown bitter but of this you may be sure
The rich have got their channels in the bedrooms of the poor
And there's a mighty judgment coming, but I may be wrong
You see, you hear these funny voices in the Tower of Song
I see you standing on the other side
I don't know how the river got so wide
I loved you baby, way back when
And all the bridges are burning that we might have crossed
But I feel so close to everything that we lost
We'll never, we'll never have to lose it again
Now I bid you farewell, I don't know when I'll be back
They're moving us tomorrow to that tower down the track
But you'll be hearing from me baby, long after I'm gone
I'll be speaking to you sweetly from a window in the Tower of Song
Yeah, my friends are gone and my hair is gray
I ache in the places where I used to play
And I'm crazy for love but I'm not coming on
I'm just paying my rent every day in the Tower of Song

Not music, but shows on music. Trash Theory is a fairly new YouTube channel curated by a fella who could well have been a researcher for Mojo. A fella who, as they say in the business, knows his shit. Not only a good sense of the canon, but who the influential bands are/were, and how their musical influences spread.
Each video essay is about 15 or 20 minutes long.
Some faves so far:
'Fugazi: The path of most resistance'
'Husker Du and the birth of alternative rock'
'How Soon Is Now? The B-side that defined The Smiths' (includes forensic analysis of Morrissey's lyrical magpieing, amongst other surprises, the lyrics from "There is a light..." include lines from old movies and a New York Dolls song)
'How Refused reshaped punk'
Sub-channel called 'New British Canon' includes research on partiuclar songs: Buzzcocks 'Ever Fallen in Love', Massive Attack's 'Unfinished Sympathy', The Specials "Ghost Town', Joy Division 'She's Lost Control'.
Get along.
Stunet, that Trash Theory is pretty, pretty good. Definitely worth a look, people. Do yourselves a favour.
Went and saw Kikagaku Moyo at the Paddo RSL last night.
Well it was one of the best gigs I've been to in years. Such talent and super tight with so much sounds. Cow bells, pan flutes, sitar, keyboard, weird spinning insturments and so much attention to detail.
I highly recommend them if they're in your area..
Was checking them out a while back on KEXP
Ain't he cute?
No he ain't,
He's just another burden on the welfare state.
"This song is better than sausages." - MrSausages, YouTube, 2013.
Well done.
Saw Amyl and the Sniffers last night in Adelaide.
My fucking God what a live show, if you haven't caught this band live make it a mission.
And the mosh made me have faith that the kids are alright.
Some mutts can't be muzzled..........WOOF WOOF!
They're live in Torquay soon. Tippin' I'll be the oldest c##t there if I rock up.
Plenty of old c##ts there last night mate, including me. There was a ring of what looked like proud old punk dads on the edge of the mosh as the groms went for it. She's amazing, threw herself into the mosh three songs in, pushed a security guard off the stage who tried to stop the diving. Get into it. Best gig I've seen in ages.

Okilly Dokilly is an American heavy metal band from Phoenix, Arizona that plays "Nedal" music; a subgenre of metal music themed around the animated character Ned Flanders from the television series The Simpsons. All four of the band's members perform dressed as Flanders, and the majority of the lyrics to their songs are quotes of his.

Alright, time for some discussion on what yr all listening too. My iTunes inventory is getting a little stale so I'm up for some inspiration.
Currently loving The Drones' album "Havilah".. incredible songwriting and some of the best recorded guitars and drum I've heard in a long time. I'm a little late to the party with this album but it's on high rotation at the moment and will probably stay there a while. I've seen these guys live once (Fowlers, Adelaide) and fortunately they're incredible on stage too. Can't wait to see them again.
