Hey all,
Anyone got advice regarding NPJ 2+1 widow maker? Pro's and con's of what conditions you like to ride? Size you ride, anything you would change?
Surfed most shapes of boards throughout my life but never been on a 2+1. Would like to change it up and keep fresh was thinking something around 7'0 and could mess around in all conditions.
If anyone has the time to throw more info and their experience about 2+1 in general I'm all ears!

Thanks.

That setup will be applicable in just about all conditions.
A 7’0 would be more of a midlength like a CI mid.
But NPJ fins have relatively bigger sides and smaller centre compared to a lot of widowmakers.
A smaller length ie 5’10-6’6 would be fine as a daily driver shorty I reckon.
Slightly smoother surfing thruster.

Cheers lostdoggy,
Have you git much experience surfing them? What conditions you like/dislike?

I like them most in decent waves that have a bit of wall.
But they are also good in the barrel.
They are an all round design so you can surf them in anything really.

I was basically going to say same things as @lostdoggy. I had a 6’4” a few years ago. Waves had to be about 4’ plus before it came to life.

Thanks for the info fellas very helpful.
Seems the majority agree they come to life in descent waves and that’s the preference to ride them.
Just got to work out exactly what I want before I go spending the cash but don’t think I can go wrong with one of his boards!

FR has a Parmenter widowmaker. Would be interesting hear his take.

Here's Neal's take on his 2+1 setup:

Yeah mine's a 7'3" kind of mid-length but more an Hawaiian style boarding terms of outline, foil and rails.

I have a ball on it in 2ft v-bank beachies, small points or 8ft windy ragged Point surf.

I’ll add a 2+1 gives you the added bonus of playing around with fins more so than a thruster. Change up the fins change your board.

I have a 7’6” CI mid and agree with what FR said about performance and fun.

Mine are glass-on fins, so this is the one board I have where I don't need to think about fins.

I've had a 6'3 and a 7'0 , amazing boards. Faster and smoother than a thruster. Will handle anything

I've surfed 2+1s almost exclusively over the last 25 years, for me they are the best. My own designs though. Would like to try NPJ's take on it if I could find one.

I find you go a lot further off the bottom turn compared to same board in thruster setup, no need to double pump a bottom turn. Do we term that ability to turn the downward gravity motion of the drop into down the line speed 'drive', or do we term it 'projection'? Whatever it is, it feels magic, like you bought a big block V8 to the drag races. In cutback you can be a lot further out on the face and cut back a lot harder and make it on the 2+1. You are not locked in the pocket with sections peeling off in front of you leaving you in the white water.

Tradeoff is it is not as responsive as the thruster. In smaller waves that rapid rail to rail transition, creating speed, is dulled. Also, if you need the board to be locked in the pocket and not shoot away from the barrel with speed as much, while you adjust to how the tube moves, I reckon thruster is better.

I have a setup and spacing for how I like my 2+1 and the size fins, which I can now make as sets. I like the idea of NPJ going a little bigger on the sides and smaller on the rear compared to many out there, will make more relatable to someone coming off a thruster. I will keep the 2+1 setup, and change the board depending on conditions: some of my boards are long straight tail rail with flat exit rocker, and some are lots of tail curve, lots of tail area, for carving walls. And in between. When it's really bowly and fast down the line, I like to switch into full single as the wave takes care of the power and then it's just pure flow which feels magnificent and fast. I think single is the ultimate progression and mastery of where 2+1 is going, but on so many occasions the waves have less oomph and so the speed held/generated by the side fins help so much.

I've tried to go back to thruster on occasions, and always come back, liking the 2+1 more to how I surf. Just come back from DS WA and it was mint to feel the full rail engaging and the speed on some of the lefts again, like growing up on the singles I did down there. Did it as 2+1 tho!

Just seen this old post pop back up. I ended purchasing a board off NPJ and absolutely love the thing! Link of old post below, treat your eyes to the beauty of his work. If you thinking of getting anything off him don’t wait!

6'6'' NPJ 2+1 .This is a beautiful board that's a joy to ride. You can see Neal has put a lot of time into his design over the years..
This board is a keeper.....
