Oh come on mate surely you can throw a paragraph together

Labors negative gearing policy is great facto, but as you point out, it's hardly nothing new. What have we seen and heard from bill since?

Pretty much nothing, in fact absolutely nothing, same shit, same platform.

Disappointing to the point of being insulting considering the glaring political upheavals in that period.

Bias= is basically not taking a balanced view but taking a side and reporting in a way to support that view.

You see it time after time on ABC radio national on just about every issue.

One recent example that really stood out to me was the reporting on changing the date of Australia day there was little balance at all i think it was John faine who even tried to take the angle that it's going to be changed in the future so why not do it now?

Those were pretty much his exact words, which doesn't make sense seeing only 15% of Australians support a date change.

So there was no evidence whatsoever to suggest it will be changed in the future, if anything the evidence we have suggest the date wont be changed.

However if you only got your news from ABC you could easily be swayed into thinking the majority want the day changed and it will happen, so no point arguing against not changing the date.

Thats just one example, you could go through issues everyday and take more examples.

Pretty sure we were talking about it before the last election, you know three or four years ago.

From the What's What thread today!

Sypkan:

"They will campaign hard against Shorten because he is the first Labor leader in a long time to threaten their lurks. "

Care to elaborate?

I haven't heard of anything of substance"

Blindboy:

"As I said above, negative gearing and franking credits. They have moved on from middle class welfare, which was always a strong vote getter for them, to wealthfare."

My mis-read?!

And here, check this:

2018_alp_national_platform_-_consultation_draft.pdf

Cut n paste.

Warning: there is some reading involved and it's straight from the horse's mouth. 211 pages of policy.

Or a shorter read:

https://www.themonthly.com.au/issue/2018/september/1535724000/richard-de...

"Shorten may be seen by many on the left as lacking the charisma or progressive legacy they need to get enthusiastic about his electoral prospects. But the party that Shorten leads is in the box seat on the back of the most progressive fiscal policy proposed by Labor in decades, and the Coalition is in tatters."

Oh yeah, it doesn't mention the National Integrity Commission there in that one, but.

sypkan's picture
sypkan's picture
sypkan Friday, 8 Feb 2019 at 8:06am

Well factobum, when I asked blindboy to elaborate,, I genuinely wholeheatedly thought he had something new, something to get excited about.

But nah, it was just the same tired old negative gearing thingy, that is ten years too late, hardly gonna save the nation, and not really the revolution in thought we're been looking for. Yearning for even.

As I alluded to, how many times can ya trot this shit out?

"....But the party that Shorten leads is in the box seat on the back of the most progressive fiscal policy proposed by Labor in decades, and the Coalition is in tatters.""

"... the most progressive fiscal policy proposed by Labor in decades,"

Again, hardly inspiring. Especially the case considering the last few decades of "progressive fiscal policy proposed by Labor" for comparison, but your bias moron is all fired up

Underwhelming again.

Especially especially when as I said...

"Disappointing to the point of being insulting considering the glaring political upheavals in that period."

still bill - as in no movement from bill - still

I'll give it a read factobum, but I've gotta warn you, if the media hasn't dug much out from your 220 pages...well...I'm expecting underwhelment...again...

Yep the "coalition is in tatters"

But why oh why, are labor still relatively in tatters in the polls, if the coalition are so broken?

You've gotta wonder

or not....

So sypkan, if you can read The Monthly piece and not recognise that no bullshit Bill is a game changer, then your comprehension skills are lacking. He is the first politician in a long time who is not only prepared to stand up to the vested interests but also understands how to make his message cut through the usual scare campaigns of the coalition. The no bullshit thing is central. He doesn't get excited and go off on flights of rhetoric or play the man. Slomo is the loud mouth at the bar talking over the top of everyone, full of his own importance. Shorten is the quiet one you would go to if you ever needed to know what was really going on.

sypkan's picture

sypkan Friday, 8 Feb 2019 at 9:58am

"Shorten’s fiscal policy platform, of collecting tens of billions of dollars by closing tax loopholes, is arguably as radical as that of Gough Whitlam."

Arguably indeed!

"Shorten succeeded spectacularly in shifting the public debate away from Tony Abbott’s “budget emergency” and towards the now popular view that Australia needs to collect more revenue. And, by finally shifting the debate away from the “blowout” in the cost of welfare and towards the need for the richest to pay their fair share of tax, "

Spectacularly changed the debate?

Or told the public exactly what they wanted to hear, in the process spectacularly delaying shit that should have been dealt with years ago, neglected as too hard by both parties!

"Australian voters have been told for decades that we need to “tighten our belts” and “live within our means”. But in recent years they finally heard a potential prime minister argue that if we don’t cut the company tax rate, if we don’t cut the top personal tax rate, and if we close a bunch of tax loopholes, then we can afford to simultaneously increase spending on essential services and reduce the budget deficit. It’s not rocket science, but it’s radical when viewed in the context of contemporary Australia."

'...increase spending on essential services and reduce the budget deficit...."

And, there it is, the labor magic pudding. Increase spending? Really?

No it's not rocket science, or radical, it's just more of the same from labor.

"...Turnbull’s proposal to give away $80 billion managed to make Shorten seem fiscally responsible, and generously populist … at the same time."

So populism is good now?

Genuine question. I really cannot keep up with when/whether populism is good.

"He opposes corporate tax cuts, assaults the banks, provides sustained support for union interests, risks the budget, seeks to tighten 457 visas and seeks permanently higher levels of spending and tax."

So radical ground breaking bill has suddenly, dramatically, realised what 'the left' of politics are actually supposed to do, rather than obsessing over....

Comforting, it only took a few decades.

I think it all sounds rather good, but radical? spectacular? ground breaking?

pffff

I don't think many people begrudge tightening tax loopholes. But I hope still bill and his cronies have factored in how much of the money from those tax loopholes will find new holes to live in.

I bet they haven't, of course they haven't, because that'd undermine their new free license to increase spending. Increase spending! Did that dude really write that?!!? Or more importantly, does he believe that's what's required? or that it will even work?

Nothing bad there, but nothing to warrant all the excitement either.

I don't know how many times in my life I've heard people who didn't seem very bright, state the obvious that everyone should have known but had forgotten. I think Trump is like that and yes probably used by God for these reasons. To show Americans how far their society has fallen because this guy is the best they could find ? and one of the only people publicly standing up for the values that they founded their now crumbling society on. How embarrassing for them, they walked away from those values and now are paying for it. Worst still, Donald is their prophet. They decided that money was god and not God. They forced God from their lives and went their own path like a fat spoiled child who doesn't know when to stop pigging out on chocolate. They ignored their Fathers wisdom and chose their own and there is the result. Australia is next, just 10 years behind the states and always has been. If you want a glimpse into the future look at them. God forced from society and schools and His wisdom replaced with humanism and eastern religions that have given them crap societies to live in. Haven't you noticed they all want to move here where our society was originally built and based on Gods Christian principles. Peace , justice for all, fairness, help the poor, monogamy, honor to the parents who bore you, honor to God who made you and breathed the breath of life into your lifeless flesh. Yes He sends rain on the evil and the good and saves His judgements on us for a final day. The day is coming, the players are assuming their positions on the chess board of earth, the Lord God is not mocked, He is patient and kind and will have His day at the appointed time. Like Laird Hamilton once said, "if you don't believe in God, you better go and sit under a big tree for a while". Ive been under that tree nearly 40 years ago, its a nice tree because Jesus the price of peace is there with you. The result, a life of pure joy, even with all life's problems and challenges which are there to refine and define you. Even in death you win...that's pretty awesome.....and I also got some 4ft A frames on my own this morning which were pretty awesome too...Ha..
.."Seek and ye shall find,..Knock and the door shall be open unto you...everyone who seeks finds..and everyone who knocks the door will be opened for them"...Jesus The Christ.

A post from way back. Well, Thursday 7th Feb on the What's What thread.

"You're a religious man, are you not, Optimist?

And an optimist too going by your moniker I take it?

"You should never talk about religion and politics". A hoary old chestnut.

BUT...maybe applicable if the view is that the two are interchangeable (as seen through the 'blind faith' prism)?

Personally I try to never discuss religion - especially with a person of faith - if I can avoid it. You can't debate with faith. Well, you can, but it's kind of pointless, and time is precious. Moreso, these days.

Politics is a different kettle of lime-scale though. Most times."

That would be the Senate controlled by the Republicans. What did you expect? Trump may avoid personal charges but the evidence that his campaign colluded with Russia is overwhelming as the numerous individuals now either behind bars or about to go there have unwillingly testified. It is also worth remembering that an absence of evidence is not evidence of absence. The possibility that there is insufficient evidence to charge him does not make it any more likely that numerous individuals working closely with him, colluded but did not tell him or act under his instructions. Believe that and you might as well spend the weekend looking for the fairies at the bottom of your garden. Good luck with that. Post it in Good News when you get a shot of the Fairy Queen.

What a classic analogy from the federalist...

"In episode 171 of “Seinfeld,” George Costanza makes up a story about having a house in the Hamptons in order to avoid attending an event with his dead fiancée’s parents, the Rosses. He soon learns they know of his deception but the Rosses nevertheless accept an invitation to the fictitious house.

George picks them up and begins driving towards a house that doesn’t exist. Both the Rosses and George maintain the pretense until George drives to the end of island past the last house in the Hamptons. George silently pleads for the Rosses to put an end to the charade. The lie’s momentum took on a life of its own as the players all continued acting their parts long after the truth was known.

The episode comes to mind as the media has started backing away from the Russia collusion hoax. Like Costanza, many of the media perpetrators seem to know a reckoning is coming. Politico warned Trump haters, “Prepare for disappointment.” Other examples of expectation managing can be found, such as here, here, here, and here. Mueller’s longtime top deputy at the FBI recently warned, “A public narrative has built an expectation that the special counsel will explain his conclusions, but I think that expectation may be seriously misplaced.”"

I used to think seinfeld was the funniest thing ever.

Now it's just the democrats that are the funniest thing ever...
