Has anyone else noticed the swells NZ has been getting lately? Southern Aus has been getting shafted with the lows slipping under us only to see the lows pop back up and slam into NZ. What is going on with the weather patterns the kiwis are getting all the waves.

Thanks for the input Welly, and you're right, it's just that the storm track has been focussed more up into New Zealand and then Tahiti the last month or so with the swell forming too late or being too west in nature to really impact the Australian East Coast.

This is all related to the positioning of the Long Wave Trough and you can read more about it here: Long Wave Trough: The Waves That Create Waves

Also another very large S/SW swell is heading to Tahiti this weekend; read about how the last swell (3 weeks ago) formed and tracked here as well as some notes on this next Code Red event: Big Swells Incoming for Tahitit

Whats happening with s-oz craig? me being a farmer I have had more rain this month than for the whole year! and the swells seem to have gone missing..or when they have been onshores have accompanied them. My theory is when farmers get rain the surf goes to shit and when we don't i.e Aug-Apr.2012-13 the surf pumps. So I kind of hate it one way but then love it another..bloody farmers..never happy!!

Yeah May's been a weird month in South Oz.

Those cut-off lows feeding in moisture from WA have just created poor winds/rain and bought no swell with them, seemingly setting up their own blocking pattern. Only longer-range swells getting in without too much size.

Just the way the current synoptic setup us, but you'll see a more classic autumn pattern later next week with a strong front pushing through followed by a strong high moving in quickly behind.

Looks like the seasons may be delayed a little this year by a month (just an observation)..
