This is a pretty special performance.

Classic Pink Floyd. Saw them live at the “ Momentary Lapse of Reason” tour in 1987 at a Thebby Oval- Still the best concert I have seen.

When I was a young fella I had to make a choice between seeing Pink Floyd or UB40. Mum wouldn't let me see both.

As you would expect at the time, I chose UB40. I'm comfortable with my decision.

Saw PF at Fremantle racecourse (long since turned into houses) 1988 in yr 11 "momentry lapse" tour , changed my life direction . Saw Rodger Waters a few years ago too and he still rips, a best of kind of tour, lots Floyd and some solo stuff, really good show. They dont make musos like that anymore.

UB40 - hahahahahahaha!

I've heard them on the radio a few times recently (Paradise FM, playing all the golden oldies) and I've come to the conclusion that they're the most over-rated band of all time.

The most over-rated band of all time is the Ramones me thinks. Although UB40 do suck pretty hard.

Classic Rab, small world! I guess Richmond Raceway was the name of the venue? Could hear it for miles around. All rich peoples homes these days, seems like 100 years ago now. Rodger Waters was at east Perth oval (home of the mighty royals) maybe 10 years ago now, really good night, I missed him last year but a mate went and said it was great too. Pink Floyd never gets old, I run "echoes" for the late night drives to the desert. they just had the 50 year anniversary for Dark Side of the Moon recently.

I remain hopeful to this day that Dave Gilmour and Roger Waters will reconcile and do one last tour. Just like the Eagles do one last tour every second year for the last twenty.

I will fly from anywhere in the world to see Pink Floyd. (Hopefully UB40 will be supporting.)

Speaking of chix TBB, I thought it might be worth mentioning Dave Gilmour gave a young Catherine Bush a leg up when no labels would go near her at the time. I'm guessing mid 70's.

Watched all four episodes of the punk doco last night, and, while it was enjoyable, I found it more a vehicle for historical curation than historical accuracy. It ignored whole influences, glossed over others, had weird timeline hiccups, and despite the filmmakers repeatedly telling us that punk keeps evolving, they showed none of that evolution, didn't even mention it, not even the obvious developments such as the Discharge, Napalm Death, Extreme Noise Terror branch of the family tree.

I first saw Iggy in '89 and at the time he was as much the Godfather of Metal as punk, and in fact he played up the metal thing more than punk, which he was seemed to disown, and even the next time I saw him in '92 he played with Slash and Duff from GnR.

These days he's again the Godfather of Punk, no mention of metal at all, but it's worth keeping in mind how history gets interpreted and reinterpreted, especially by celebrities forever sharpening their public image so as to be seen in just the right light.

In Episode 1 they speak of creative demise at the hand's of drugs and how it could've taken punk down before it started. Iggy speaks, Sylvain Sylvain speaks, Danny Fields too, and it's told as if it was a moment, but the Stooges split up years before the New York Dolls imploded and the whole CBGBs thing was happening. Sloppy storytelling. They added in a convenience that didn't exist.

I was thrilled to see Ian Mackaye get interviewed, even if he looks like a chaplain from a summer camp these days, but it was gobsmacking to see Fugazi not even mentioned. Arguably the most important punk band of the 80s, who did more to evolve the sound and ethos than any other band - ideas the fillmmakers were at pains to present - and they may as well have not existed.

Similarly, there was a lot of talk about 'conformity' and how punks needed to break out of those rules, all well and good, but the fucking filmmakers didn't apply the same thinking to themselves packaging punk within a very defined sound, one that reached it's pinnacle in 1980 and kept rehashing it forever after. So despite Discharge et al coming from punk and progressing the sound while holding true to underground ideas, they again just didn't exist. A whole blossoming branch of the tree cut off while Southern Californian melody punk gets a whole episode.

However, the worst own goal was how oblivious the filmmakers were to the seeds of punk; kids across the Western world concurrently finding voice amongst 70s social disintegration following the optimism of the 60s. In one sense the oversight was understandable as the filmmakers were American and punk there was more 'expressive' than the overtly policial punk of the UK, but at least have the gumption to recognise it comes from the same source.

Lots of unreal interviews and historical footage, such as Darryl Jennifer describing how he "sees" music, HR doing a backflip on the last note of Pay To Cum - priceless shit - plus charismatic wankers like Johnny Rotten and Hank owning the camera, there was a lot to like, but for all the filmmakers rhetoric about punk's ongoing rejuvenation it was just a bunch of old people talking about the past, and taken in it's entirety that left me feeling sad.

It'd be interesting to watch it back-to-back...or not.

I concur, Stu, in the main. Though do you mean to place Fugazi, and their cultural influence and importance, in the 90s? (First recorded stuff late 80s, first album 1990).

I agree with the assessment re: Fugazi as the embodied ethos, and to not even mention them wounded the whole project mortally. And they had Mackaye fucking there?!

And the passover of the whole early Seattle/Sub Pop scene as what? not 'punk'? Mudhoney's Mark Arm is a punk historian as well as a starter, let alone keeper, of the flame. Highly, crucially influential. Nothing.

Just take one year, 1988. It was a huge year with three absolutely crucial and highly influential recordings. Napalm Death's 1st proper and fully realised LP From Enslavement to Obliteration (Sept); Mudhoney's SuperFuzz Bigmuff ep (Oct); Fugazi's self titled ep (Nov).

And all bands not mentioned.

And going back to earlier episodes, did Crass get a mention at all?

Punk is such a loose umbrella term, you can pretty much call anything punk with raw vocals and noisy guitars and use it for an umbrella term for so many different musical movements.

Fugazi are important and highly influential and obviously fall under the punk umbrella, but id rather call them post hardcore than punk and although not technically an emo band, you could say they are like the seed for emo. (hate that word) and like a band like Sonic youth kind of art/noise rock too.

I dont know I guess they had to stop somewhere and kind of hard to cover every band from various scenes around the world..

BTW. assuming we are talking about that ABC or SBS docco series, been a few weeks since i watched it now

I mean Fugazi as the most important band, perhaps not of the 80s per se, but of that mid-80s period where punk was at risk of disappearing up its own arse while the music was splintering in all directions. They signposted the way forward; showed there was still vitality left in the ideas and the form - and also that it didn't have to be played four to the floor.

Large swathes of the doco were spent showing how punk music remained relevant. Well...? In Seppo parlance, Fugazi are a slam dunk.

They proved that punks could have a second act.

The mid 80s onwards featured some of the most fruitful and expansive and plain weird stuff. Far removed from the hardcore ghetto.

Big Black; Butthole Surfers; Hüsker Dü poking their head above the underground; Sonic Youth; even the 'crossover' metal detente with bands like DRI. And that's the Seppos!

The aforementioned anarcho-punk/metal fastest heaviest endgame of Napalm Death and their ilk in the UK.

And let's not get started on the Aussies!

Always thought the 'underground' music of the 80's was this music, I never called it 'punk' per se, but it included Fugazi, Mudhoney, Rollins, Sonic Youth, Cure, acoustically the Violent Femmes, also hardons, thrombus... anything non mainstream was included for me, so Smiths as well as electronic stuff like New Order and Joy Division, The The, exposure to stuff I thought was industrial, eg Ministry
On the surface the late 80's mainstream music was Collettes 'Ring My bell' and Fine Young Cannibals, Richard Marx at #1 for months, Kenny G, Phil Collins soundtracks - you just had to flee
Anyway, got the riffs for Dirty Boots echoing through the house as my son has found Sonic Youth, sounds mint, either played on standard tuning or one of those weird string-destroying Sonic Youth tunes, eg FFCCAA... and now he's gone to Jazz, all good!

Fucking brilliant band. 

Mackaye is the Wittgenstein of punk - succesful in two fields, years apart - and Guy Picciotto is Flava Flav to Mackaye's Chuck D: the toaster in the call and reply, and later when he played guitar occupying the up town sonic real estate.

Repeater is ten times the album of Nevermind.

And the Fugazi chapter in 'Our Band Could Be Your Life' is more essential than doctors in a pandemic.

Fugazi remains probably THE best band I have ever seen live. Feel privileged that I got to see them. 1997, 2nd year uni, probably 4th year of almost exclusive interest in punk / hardcore music.
Energy in that room was electric, real interesting crowd. Totally different to the majority of the gigs I was seeing around that time. Like a unique generation or subset of fans, more intense but not the moronic mosh pit crew. Ian Mc stopped the gig, mid-song, to kick some guy out who had clobbered a chick in the crowd. Told security to give his money back and then just picked up where they left off.

They’re on an extended hiatus. Spent a lot of time in DC over the years. Always check the local street press when I’m there on the off chance that I’ll catch an under-the-radar reunion gig. Steady diet of nothing. But, man, DC is an interesting town.

You may already know, but they recorded pretty much every show they did from mid 90’s onwards. If you went to a gig, you can download it through dischord. I’ve got 21 June 97 gig at roxy bris. Such a gig. $5 will buy you sweet, sweet reminisce.

Re energy in the room. I bumped into a mate who was from cenny qld who was a bit of a charger. Actually went to the toilets and came across him as he was post-chuck in the basins, before the gig. Anyway he decided about third song in to do a bit of crowd surfing. Didn’t read the room. At. All. Even the band objected. Not same gig etarip?

As a poor early teenager, when CD LPs were all $30 in oz, I did appreciate that Fugazi had printed on theirs ‘Do not sell for more than US $10’.

Good band, but I could never figure how serious Nation of Ulysses took themselves with their manifesto and ideology plastered front and centre. Sorta felt like DEVO without the chuckles.

My Bro plays in local band that does songs mostly about football. He calls it punt rock.

there was an excellent interview with dave faulkner on triple r saturday afternoon

he spoke mainly about his time in perth in the late 70's playing with his band the victims, a band i hadn't heard much about apart from knowing of their song television addict

he also mentioned that they have reformed, with ray anh from hardons playing bass & will be touring post-covid19
