I'd prefer them to the LNP of course, but I hope Labor really have to work for it and I hope there are moments when they're shitting themselves, both during the election tally and also trying to cobble something together if/when they have to form a minority government.
I hope both Labor's and the LNP's votes continue to go backwards so they realise that shit has to change.

Optimist. Hi mate.
What is it with you and gas?
You simply can’t wean yourself off it.
What’s the attachment mate ?
If it’s for lower energy costs to Australians well you’re dreaming, continue on with polluting the joint and Australia will be paying much more in the future when our environment is tarnished beyond repair.
Why can’t people imagine or look into the future, we’re already draining the planet of all it’s got.
It’s time to put gas to bed or better off, leave it where it is.
It’s no longer a gas, gas, gas, Mick. AW

So just burn it somewhere else while we pay extra....

Well, how about we as a country become an exemplar to other nations and hope they follow.
We’ve had it too long too good and too cheap, historically we’re all guilty of knocking our continent around environmentally.
For fuck same we’ve got very wealthy Western Districts farmers here in Victoria who are vehemently against solar and wind farms.
Their argument, they liked it the way it use to be, yeah, cheap and polluting.
Can’t change for the better, they just want more change in their greedy fat pockets.
Something has gotta give sooner or later, Australia needs to move out of the 50’s mentality of energy provision.
If you like, I can pull up recent data of Antarctic water issues, global imaging systems tracking polar ice melts and the migration of global forests towards the poles , birds voices changing as they go to higher altitudes, birds bodies reducing in overall size for the last 70 years, wings becoming larger with more surface area, all this to dissipate heat because the environment around them is heating up.
Our actions affect every biological organism on planet, if you don’t think so, then you think in a selfish manner.
We are only here for a short period of time, but geez we’ve done some damage.
We should have expensive energy costs, hopefully it would encourage people to use it more wisely, instead of seeing buildings alit at night whilst offices are empty, past clients of mine leaving most lights on whilst at work, the shit that goes on does my head in, also one of the worst of all is the people who sit in their cars, engine running for ages whilst fucking around on their phones, turn the fucking thing off, I’ve had plenty of altercations particularly in supermarket car parks with people doing it.
More so in the hot states and especially in Summer, air con blasting , car engines pumping out shit whilst we get changed for a surf, get a life. AW

We are all being scammed ....the people that we give billions of renewables money to own the gas exports as well...
They won't sell it cheap here because they get more for our resource overseas....its still getting used though in their cooking...their baseload power...their LNG cars...(currently the most environmentally friendly cars overall ) and in their COMPETITIVE INDUSTRY while ours shuts down.
Its hard to take advice from you guys who continually voted Dan Andrews in and turned Victoria into
"the poverty state".....now there's a number plate for the state that owes 1/3 of a trillion dollars...
But its OK, Albo is giving our NSW GST money to you to help bail you out so we can go under too...
Albo has some attractive ideas, but him and Jim "chicken" Chalmers are generously handing out our own money back to us on credit for us and grankids to pay back one day...
He is a federal Dan Andrews and we will go broke down his road....
Its all about balance....we are going ahead fine environmentally but it has to be done wisely and carefully to adapt properly and stop selling us out to the cartels who are in both ways.

Sypkan. Hi mate, nice reply, I know we are mates, but really, I’m no heartthrob and I’m definitely not after your heart, especially one running on gas!!!
That horse has bolted, hay !
Which horse have you ridden on in to the Swellnet forums, a rocking horse, seahorse or a bet each way horse.
No matter what any statistics show, we can all do better by torching gas for good.
It depends on what type of person you are.
For example, Optimist comes across as an ok guy but I’ve lost count of the amount of times he’s used the word cheap over the last few years when referencing gas.
He’s obviously got deep pockets and short forearms.
Why does gas have to be cheap ?
It appears as though a lot of Australians and those of other wealthy nations have scant regard for lesser economic countries and in particular those that reside close to sea level, as in our Pacific neighbours
Greed personified, we holiday in these idylls of the Pacific, again, cos it’s cheap ( there’s that word again, it just keeps on popping up like ‘Wack A Mole’ at the amusement centre) but we are killing their countries with our selfish ways.
I’ll say it again, nuclear is not required, the largest thermonuclear reactor is above our heads, just use it.
BTW, statistics from social media sites like X don’t impress me one iota.
Bring some real time data and evidence that nuclear is the way to go, sorry, I just burped, bit of gas!!!. A bit of fun, more engagement the better. Good to chat. AW

Maybe you should have had the spaghetti before the whine!!!. All the best pal.AW
Edit:, bills I have are annual rates $2K. I’ve own water, septic, photovoltaics, battery and an evacuated tube hot water system, no fossil fool energy at all.
I run the household 12V downlights from a 138ampH lead acid battery, never runs out of juice, charged by one 200Watt solar panel.
It’s easy to be self sufficient and not cost you or the world to do it. Just need to take the leap and break the bond with your regular fossil fuel provider who you will give 100’s of 1000’s of dollars to over your lifetime, think about it. I know you have Opti, good on you.

I was surprised to learn the other day that UK are currently building a new Nuclear power station
(from Dec)

Workers have fitted a reactor into the first nuclear power station to be built in Britain for 30 years."

And look to be be building more

mm, those sunless countries with dense population, trained experts, existing grid appropriateness, nuclear IP that needs support, public roadway plutonium transportation experience and infrastructure, unionised workers, waste protocols with associated industries and electorates that have a track record of embracing 'em... sure.

What an absolute shocker of an ad. The sad part is they paid some strategist to come up with that shit.
In addition to all the polls showing a swing to Labor, the most important poll of all, Sportsbet, has Labor $1.29, Coalition $3.62.
Game over.

It's not even a competition, especially as labor transformed itself into the main tax cutting political party in Australia.

Yeah thats the problem cost, but its still interesting that UK are building some nuclear as are other countries .
I think its much more realistic that we will just have to go with more gas peaking plants to support renewable's to provide that energy safety net.
"Energy tsar: Australia needs 26 gas power plants
Monday 1 July 2024
Both the AEMO and MB keep saying it: gas is the only way to stabilise and decarbonise the grid so that we don’t bankrupt ourselves trying to meet meet Paris Agreement targets.
The east coast of Australia will need 13 gigawatts of new gas fired electricity generation – the equivalent of building 26 new gas plants – within the next 25 years to back up the rollout of renewables."
https://www.macrobusiness.com.au/2024/07/energy-tsar-australia-needs-26-...
While If you wanted to do what AW wants and not have that safety net of gas, you would need a crazy amount of batteries in reserve that you wouldn't need or use 95% of the time, the cost would be insane.
I heard the other day 3 months worth of storage would be needed without a fuel based energy security net.
So if true, if we end up with 48 hours of storage across Australia by 2050 for the energy security safety net needed in storage we would need roughly another 2,112 hours of energy storage (90 days x24hr = 2,160 minus 48hrs of storage = 2,112hrs extra needed)
There is probably a good argument that green hydrogen can replace gas (at least in time), but there must be a good reason for now why it currently isn't in the equation?
That said they also say gas peaking plants can be converted to run on green hydrogen, so if the green hydrogen thing becomes more realistic than all those gas peaking plants are not a waste

"There is probably a good argument that green hydrogen can replace gas (at least in time), but there must be a good reason for now why it currently isn't in the equation?"
green hydrogen is a pipedream...
just ask twiggy, who just spent several years and billions of dollars of shareholders money chasing it...

you cannot break the laws of thermodynamics

Easier than coming up with a policy or two, but ultimately tragically sad.
They should sack their strategy team.
After asking for family to be left out of politics, Dutton brings in his son, and it now looks like he'll publicly state he'll provide his kids with some help to get into their own home.
And I see people are now calling for changes in Negative Gearing: Shorten must be having a quiet chuckle.
The Liberals campaign has morphed into an unbelievable shit show comedy.

I think the Indons can and should do what they want. We can express our preference.
But I think expressing our concern with the presence of Russian bombers in Indonesia is as far as any action by Australia will go.
Certainly not fostering an astroturf insurgency, an undeclared invasion and then an all out invasion.
Anyway, I think the Indonesians are savvy enough to play both sides without becoming embroiled.

Hope so, but playing both sides didn't work out that well for Sukarno and approx 1 million Indonesians in 1965..
And agree with Opti, we should stay out of European affairs, by all means speak diplomatically against Russia, but offering to send peace keeping troops to a peace keeping force which will never eventuate is pretty thoughtless.

IndoDreaming. Hi mate and others.
No gas or nuclear for me as you already know.
Victoria currently derives 38% of its power from renewables, this has occurred at quite a rapid rate.
Soon it will near 50% and by 2030 100%.
If it’s doable for our state. Why not others ?
The only thing holding back progress is the historical mindset of the provision of fossil fuel , we just can’t seem to let it go.
Before we had gas and electricity derived from fossil fuels, we burnt wood and coke.
We were capable of moving away from those two polluters at some stage so there’s no reason why we can’t move away from gas and coal fired power stations.
Society has to want to change, I think they do , just need a little kick up the arse.
It doesn’t matter what energy amounts are required to run Australia, just build very large systems to manufacture the energy, it’ll still be way cheaper than nuclear reactors.
I will never change my view whilst we reside in a society that’s capable of building anything, just do it and showcase to the world how it’s done. I’m choking on all this talk of gas . AW

we're gonna pip you @AW.. (another reason why SA is heaps good @wax):
"South Australia generates more than 70% of its electricity from renewable sources. By 2025/2026, this is projected to reach 85%, with a target of 100% net renewable energy by 2027"
(but then 50% of SA households make their toast and tea over a woodfire in the backyard, and 75% of us don't bathe in hot water more than once a month, even if we need it).

Basesix. Hi
Well of gotta mouth full of pips. Good on ya SA, front runners.
I’ve scribed this here before, Sir Marcus Oliphant once deduced that if you covered an area the size of South Australia with parabolic photovoltaics, you could power the whole globe. Food for thought to all those ‘gaslighters’ on here. AW

Yes this 1.5 billion could be better spent elsewhere, like giving a bigger subsidy to the mining & gas sectors . Or perhaps private schools .

Its great where Victoria is at with renewables and I’m a believer.
They do have shortfalls already though during summer when everyone turns on their AC and suppliers have to shut down zones.
My concern is when all these future electric cars are home at night charging as well as all electric stoves at night cooking and then the AC on as well on a hot night how on earth can the grid hold it without a form of baseload back up?
It just doesn’t add up…….
….small gas fired backups which will be converted to biogas and or hydrogen eventually seem the easy choice for the shortfalls when they pop up…..which will be regular….
If we had those we wouldn’t even need to talk about nuclear.

If we had those we wouldn’t even need to talk about nuclear.
of course, you're right @Opti, and if we want to manufacture necessities here, so carbon isn't wasted on global transport, we need more than each person being self sufficient.. there's no answers, but it is pure evil to not at least try to do right by future gens, as we are all trying to in our little heads..
great saying on the radio the other day "the best time to plant a tree is 100 years ago, the second best time is today" (doesn't entirely work, second best would be 99 years ago, but the sentiment is sound and it's at least as good as biblical aphorisms ; )

On bonanza, I remember Hoss and Little Joe talking when they cutdown a tree on the ponderosa…..
Hoss….pa says when we gotta cut down a tree…we gotta plant two more….
Yep Ben was all over it.

Optimist. Hi mate.
How was that spaghetti and red whine ?
I understand your concerns re supply, baseload power can be provided by simply having large enough batteries that store phenomenal amounts of energy.
If we can send rockets to moons and other craft out to the edge of our solar system, well then, we can build whatever storage facilities we need.
I know you’re like me, we have a love of being able to provide ourselves with our own power at a little cost.
It’s worth checking out this young man on YouTube, he is so knowledgeable and clearly explains everything you need to know about small scale set ups. All the best.
His name is Will Prowse. DIY Solar set ups. You’ll enjoy it for sure. AW

good stuff @Opti, Hoss and Little Joe were being scripted by writers who knew that we aren't provided this place to endlessly ravage for our needs. 'God will provide' believers started to see that he also taketh away, leading to some critical legislation in 1891 as I've mentioned before. There's a delusion in America that there is such a thing as a free lunch, and a fairy-tale belief that the Ponderosa to Little House On The Prairie to WWI era was golden. Certainly wasn't golden for the natural world.
Might as well put this up in the politics subforum, to spare the front page. It's 18 months away or so, but here we go.
This is how Dutton wins:
