Women

Women.
A word that seems a little out of place on Swellnet.
Discuss if you dare.
Lets invite some women into this conversation.
Ask your female friends to join and contribute.....again...if you dare.
Lets see if the blokes of Swellnet can make space in the shed for some...other humans.
Question> Why are there no females on Swellnet, except for maybe 2 or 3 that have stayed true (respect legends).

I don’t believe Swellnets business model is geared towards women, nothing wrong with that Southern. Stop trying to be a saviour. Women and fucking tough man. Feminism means being treated as equals. Women don’t need you to save them champ.

Would love to see more women post here, i do think its a bit about age, while there is younger posters here, posters seem to be mostly be 40+ often in their 50-60s and there isn't much older women surfers as even starting surfing in the late 80s there was only one girl who surfed at school, even in the 90s they were a real novelty in the water, now its very different lots of girls surf where i live.

So yeah i think it has a bit to do with age, i think younger people in general are less likely to post in forums and more likely to stick to social media.

BTW. last few Indo trips we have had female surfers stay and it's been such a joy to surf with them, they have been the biggest frothers spending crazy hours in the water, and one girl would passionately wait her turn out the back for the inside position and then only take the biggest sets (not huge, but well overhead) and then surf with so much style, the sisters that stayed this years were great value on land too.

So yeah female surfers if your out there reading dont be shy, join the conversation.

She grew up in Topeka, Kansas, in a compound with other members of the church.

As a child, she was taught the Westboro Baptist Church doctrine and participated in the church's pickets against homosexuality, the American response to the September 11 terrorist attacks, and the funerals of soldiers who died in the War in Afghanistan and the War in Iraq. In 2009, she became active on Twitter to preach the church's doctrine.

Phelps-Roper began to doubt her beliefs when Twitter users pointed out contradictions in the Westboro Baptist Church's doctrine, and when elders changed the church's decision-making process.

Phelps-Roper left the church in 2012 after she was unable to reconcile her doubts with her beliefs. Q. Why are there no females on swelllnet ? I think a female would be best at answering this question . I can only assume or try and guess the answer so I’ll take a stab at it . Not interested in the forums . Possibly prefer talking face to face about topics that interest them . Some may read the conversations on these threads and think WTF ? There may be many signed up but like some blokes are only interested in the forecasts and don’t wish to participate in discussions for whatever reasons . Some females may just not have the time to spend reading and writing on forums for a whole range of reasons, like having a life , haha . I think indo’s take on age also has something to do with it . Plenty of females that surf( and those that don’t ) know how to stand up for themselves and are intelligent, interesting and thoughtful humans. I too would like to see more females participate in discussions on swellnet , why you may ask ? To read their take and perspective on subjects . At the end of the day though, they may find it doesn’t really interest them after reading some of the shit that comes out from all of us blokes at times . They may prefer to spend more of their free time surfing .

Make sure you wear it around the right way Seeds.

I have an answer to the original question.

The reason why few women are on Swellnet is simply there is nothing interesting here for them. For example, women are not interested in chatting about bear hunting, chainsaws and how to self-suture a gaping chest wound. Conversely, men are not interested in chatting about endometriosis, flower arranging or great places for brunch. It's that simple, I shouldn't have to spell it out.

Cheers for the thoughtful replies above crew. Great to see some well thought out replies to the question. It's a challenging topic to bring up and also address.
Much appreciated and alot of respect for you all for taking the time.
@supa, great responses also.
Just want to add a shout out to Swellnet itself. You continually provide a platform with awesome articles on..well everything. There's no bias and no prejudice towards anyone. There's nothing more you lot could do in this space.
One needs to look no further than to see the two leading items on Swellnets home page are both about women. Huge respect for that Swellnet as that's a catalyst to continue our unification of our brothers and sisters of the ocean. It shouldn't go understated how much you crew do in that space. Also FR's contest reports are on the money and hold no favour to male or female, they're just honest reflections of what falls before his eyes and his observations are based on performance and character, not on gender so hats off to FR also.
I reckon i could speak for all of us that there's no male or female difference when we're down the beach or in the water together, with our friends of the opposite sex.
This is more of an observation that Swellnet doesn't have many female contributors down in the forums and i'd be stoked to see that shift as it'd be awesome to have a different perspective to some of the convos.. and shit. Imagine ....SN could double their revenue! (you can send me the cheque in the mail).
Would love to have seen some women's replies to some of the stuff happening throughout the US elections.
And also, it's not a bad thing also if it's a strictly male space here. But honesty and acknowledgement of that would add some clarification to the fact it is a bit of a male echo chamber and should be observed as such...and all posts should be seen and judged through that lens. Which is what i've kinda been banging on about the last few days.
No apologies.
Great stuff all.
A shift in perspective, a self aware bunch you all are.
Very heart warming.
Cheers.

southernraw's picture

So much to unpack in @zenagains reply, so lets see how i go.
Firstly. Am i correct to assume you live in Japan with a Japanese wife @zen?
So perhaps, culturally, you're looking at this through that lens instead of a more modern Westernised one?
Ok. So if your post is actually what you think, then you're stuck in the dinosaur era, as are those that supported it. And there in lies the problem on swellnet. The boysclub that lurks deep within the forums. What self respecting woman would want to get tangled up in that.
A few facts.
Firstly, Endometriosis. I've got a couple of friends that are currently battling that. It's no joke. And yeah, we talk about it all the time. One of those friends has just had major surgery, and i mean major to help rid one side of her body from it. She's layed out for the next 6 months to recover from it. You know what. If there was a thread on SN about it, i'd be all over it, offering things i've learnt in the form of natural therapies for our friends to share with their friends...etc. So that was a really lame fucken thing to say.
Secondly, bears, chainsaws and gaping wounds....orgh orgh...i'm a man!
Fuck mate, are you for real? Firstly, this is a surfing website. Secondly, i know heaps of female friends that froth on that stuff. What era are you living in?
What makes you think these topics are purely the domain of males?
Lets have a little look at the numbers. I hate wasting my time having to spell it out to pigs like yourself, but here i am....
Random surf pics, I heart WOTD, I love Bali, Random Insta pics....all of these have the highest interaction amongst swellnet users. In the thousands. I couldn't actually find the forum on bears and chainsaws but i'm sure it's not in those numbers. Are these the sort of forums that are 'just for blokes..wink wink'? You're full of shit.
What about waxoff??
The United States of A, Botany Nerds Ahoy(surely anti woman), Australia you're standing in it, the Neccessity of Reparation for Historical Injustices(a personal favourite). All these threads rate in the multiple of thousands for interaction. Are any of these exclusive male places? Again, somewhere lower on the rankings was chainsaws and brushcutters.
So what i'm seeing and i've seen for some time with you btw, is that you just want to keep this place the domain of men. Which is fine. But just say it as such and don't blame the platform the site provides, which, is all inclusive
This site has been held hostage by seedy middle aged males like yourself and a few other's like the ones i had a barney with last night, that want their little mens shed and boys club. You've continually taken pot shots at me anytime i bring up the woman conversation.
All i can say with certainty, is the dinosaurs will die and good fucken riddance.
Now i sincerely hope your post was taking the piss because this one aint.

Im a fan of Zen and me and SR and me dont get on, but i dont think the subject matter is really a factor with women who surf not posting here much.

The female surfers ive hung out with in Indo (lots of down time) talk about pretty much everything we talk about here, from Bali and travel, to house prices, to music and movies, to climate change even Trump and of course as surfers, surfing and even board design and surfing experience's and stories.

Again i think its more an age thing younger surfers post here less than older surfers, this forum is pretty active but forum's are kinda dead compared to early days of the net, its all social media these days for younger people, plus many d nt have the time to talk shit in a forum full of old guys who have too much time on their hands.

And i think its also just a numbers game, while surfing is much more popular with women these days, they are still a small minority and its only a tiny tiny percentage of Aussie surfers that post here.

Plus even if there is the female poster that pops in from time to time, its not like she is going to always have a name that indicates she is female or say hey im a female, just so you know, maybe you can treat me differently now.

reckon a lot of us would have some constructive things to say in a less combative and judgmental thread, women surfers included, alas, not many spaces stay calm and productive for long (which may be part of the issue).  so it is as it is.  For what it is worth I know of one female commenter, and suspect 3 or 4 others (there are certainly some great femme watchers/commenters on the live comps, often from the US - one from Nth Carolina is prolific ), but they duck in, duck out for infrequent comments when there's something interesting on the go, usually upstairs, (the forums down-below seem to be for varying degrees of argy-bargy, for better or worse, in often pretty pointless, polarised, circular arguments).  Agree our sisters have challenges we take for granted, but also don't need our help or pity.  Just understanding and respect.

maybe we can revisit this fresh in a few weeks @southern. Hope the study is going well mate.

Southern, mate, it was a joke- you know, humour, trying to lighten the mood.

When I get a chance, I will give you a detailed and respectful reply. You might be a bit surprised when I reveal a little more about myself to you.

But for now, I don't have the time, I've got waves to chase and that downtrodden woman of mine is running that mouth of hers in the kitchen. Something about not paying her enough attention or something like that. Dunno, wasn't really listening.

Edit; btw, if I'm ever over your way I'll take you out to brunch (if you know a good place?) all I ask in return is you help me recognise a redneck- they sound like something I want nothing to do with.
