Firstly, Geert Wilders isn't the leader of the Netherlands.
Secondly, and it's a little more complex, our current Federal govt inherited migration numbers largely through overseas student and temporary work visas lodged prior to COVID. Break down the 737,000 and you'll see those two categories making up most of the pie.
The numbers means very little on their own. How many are counted in permanent migration is where it crosses over into something more meaningful.
OS students and temporary work visas are largely at the behest of the university sector and the Business Council, and both are having the squeeze put on them. Following a 2022 review into migration, the Albanese govt has capped OS students from next year and many unis are currently cutting staff, cutting courses, and cutting domestic student numbers (OS students underwrite much of local students costs).
The same 2022 review also suggested capping temporary work visas though that hasn't been acted on yet, and whenever the issue is broached the BCA and its media lackeys push back against the Albanese govt. 'Who'll do the work?'
Curiously those same media lackeys also attack the govt about its migration. Talk about having it both ways.

I think you're mistaking migration with permanent migration.
Permanent migration was about 185k last time I looked, if you take COVID into account (no migration) averaging out you could knock that back to about 1/2 to 3/4's of the total.

There aren't 700k "new Australians", there are 700K people migrating, with the majority of that number on a short-term visa who will exit the country once it runs out. Yeah, other migrants on short-term visas will come in and replace them, however that number is reducing for reasons I've shown above.
If the number was suddenly cut Australia's third-largest export would collapse with inflation ramifications throughout our economy. Similarly, if temporary work visas were cut too fast the restructuring would send reverberations through an already fragile economy.

He had some brilliant ideas: he removed the landfill levy (all states applied a levy to waste disposal) only to find commercial operators driving from as far away as central NSW to dump their waste, rapidly reducing the operational life of many SEQ landfills. And they are expensive to establish and operate.
Last I saw of him he was complaining about the ABC broadcasting in indigenous language. No longer a LNP member, he has drifted into extreme RWNJ territory.

Hey Salty Dog, my mrs works in Youth Justice, the 'boot camps' were very well-received in regional communities and actually achieved some results, turned the lives of some very troubled kids around. If you support a Labor government that has basically said 'do whatever the fuck you want kids we ain't gonna do anything' then you deserve your house getting broken into. It was a massive issue for the people throughout regional Qld, people that actually work with these troubled kids think they were a great idea.
