Recap

Perth offered some OK waves yesterday morning with cleanish conditions and some new west swell to 3ft, but a strengthening NW’ly created choppy, deteriorating conditions into the afternoon with a further increase in size. Mandurah and Margs were poor from the get go.

This morning it looked like the swell was down a bit with poor conditions across all locations but a SW change is now moving through and with it some new energy has arrived.

This week and next (Jul 11 - 19)

The current poor wind and weather is thanks to a high riding mid-latitude frontal system pushing in from the west, with a trailing front moving in today.

This front will produce some low quality swell for tomorrow morning, easing through the day and winds will remain fresh from the W/SW-SW across Margs while Perth and Mandurah should see early NE winds.

Size wise, easing 3ft sets are due in Mandurah, 2ft to possibly 3ft in Perth.

Of greater importance is the larger S/SW groundswell due into Friday across the state, generated by a vigorous polar frontal system that’s developed east of the Heard Island region. A great fetch of W/SW gales are being projected through our southern swell window today, with the progression expected to weaken and move under the country tomorrow.

The swell should be in at dawn across the South West, arriving through the day to the north and reaching 10ft+ on the magnets, 3ft in Mandurah and 2-3ft across Perth.

Conditions are now looking better for all locations Friday with a light E/SE-E/NE offshore in the South West, E/NE to the north. There might be a bit of lump about, ironing out during the day ahead of weak sea breezes.

The swell will ease back through Saturday from 6-8ft in the South West, 2-3ft Mandurah and 2ft Perth with E’ly tending variable winds, smaller again Sunday under fresher E/NE tending E/SE winds.

Into next week, the swell looks to bottom out Monday, while some new, inconsistent W/SW swell is due Tuesday/Wednesday, generated by a flurry of broken up frontal activity moving in from South Africa.

It isn’t overly special and the swell will be on the slower side and small along with strengthening N/NE winds, poor thereafter.

Therefore with this in mind, make the most of the coming period of swell and clean conditions.
