Large surf developing this week but with onshore winds
Western Australia Surf Forecast by Craig Brokensha (issued Monday 10th July)
Best Days: Friday morning all regions, Sunday morning all regions
Recap
Workable waves across the Margaret River region on Saturday with a good new S/SW groundswell and light south-east wind, favouring protected breaks.
Sunday was smaller but nice and clean with a variable tending light offshore wind.
Perth and Mandurah saw good conditions with light offshore winds and good sized waves Saturday, smaller into Sunday.
This morning the surf was tiny around Perth and Mandurah while Margs continued in the 3-4ft range with a period of favourable winds.
This week (Jul 11 – 14)
A small low is currently approaching from the west bringing the increasing N'ly winds and weather, and we'll see this low push across us tomorrow, followed by a stronger frontal system Wednesday.
There's an outside chance for an early N/NE breeze across the South West tomorrow morning with an inconsistent 3-5ft of SW groundswell, while Perth and Mandurah will be clean and tiny early ahead of a W'ly change as the stronger front approaches.
In Friday's update we were talking about a large SW groundswell event through this week, but we've had a further upgrade in the size due across the state.
This is a result of the polar frontal progression being stronger than forecast, with an initial front generating a fetch of severe-gale to storm-force winds, followed by a secondary broader fetch of severe-gale W/SW winds being projected up and into us.
We'll see two separate swells off this progression, the first for Wednesday afternoon, building to 6-8ft across the South West and 2-3ft in Perth, ahead of the larger increase Thursday to the 10-12ft+ range and 3ft+ respectively.
The only issue are the local winds with strong W/NW tending W/SW breezes due Wednesday and then easing W/SW tending SW breezes Thursday.
Friday looks clean with variable winds through the morning and easing surf from 6-8ft in the South West and 2-3ft in Perth and Mandurah.
This weekend onwards (Jul 15 onwards)
Into the weekend a long-range and inconsistent W/SW groundswell is due to fill in Sunday. This swell only looks to be moderate in size, and a change moving through Saturday is expected to clear Sunday leaving offshore winds.
Further inconsistent W/SW groundswells are due through next week but with what looks to be less than ideal winds. More on this Wednesday.
