Average outlook for WA
Western Australia Surf Forecast by Craig Brokensha (issued Wednesday 21st June)
Best Days: No great days - Saturday morning south magnets in the South West, similar Sunday, swell magnets next week across the South West
Recap
Strong offshore winds and smaller surf yesterday not amounting to much as a small low formed directly to our south-west.
Today some poor windswell was seen from the low across Perth and Mandurah but with average winds, while the South West saw some new SW swell in the mix. Conditions were poor all around though.
This week and weekend (June 22 – 25)
The low sitting to our south-west looks like it might generate a little more size for Perth and Mandurah tomorrow. It's due to broaden and aim a fetch of strong to gale-force S'y tending S/SW winds just within our swell window this evening. It may even generate some S'ly swell for the Margs region, with sets to 4ft, mixed in with some mid-period SW swell.
Perth and Mandurah should see 3ft waves through the morning, easing off through the day but winds will be poor and fresh to strong from the SW as the northern flank of the low impacts the coast. Margs will be cleaner but average with a fresh and gusty S/SE breeze.
Into Friday the low will weaken and start moving east, leaving strong SE winds across the coast and tiny waves around Perth and Mandurah.
A new S/SW groundswell is due across Margs, produced by a vigorous polar front developing late in our southern swell window. A fetch of gale to severe-gale SW winds will produce a very acute S'ly groundswell that's due to build to 6ft on the sets at south magnets across the South West, and only 1-1.5ft later in the day around Perth if we're lucky.
Better winds are due as the swell eases Saturday with an E/SE offshore and easing sets from 4-6ft across south magnets in the South West, tiny further north.
Come Sunday the surf is due to be smaller but light E/NE offshores should favour swell magnets through the morning across the South West.
All of next week is still looking small as a large blocking high deflects any major frontal systems away from our main swell windows (of which there aren't any in any case).
Small background SW energy is due through most of next week in the 3-5ft range across the South West, but tiny to the north. Conditions look favourable as well each morning before sea breezes kick in.
Longer term we may see a stronger swell developing next weekend form a strong polar front projecting towards us, but more on this Friday.
