Western Australia Surf Forecast by Craig Brokensha (issued Monday 20th October)

Best Days: Tuesday morning around Margs and Gero, Wednesday around Margs and Perth, Friday morning Margs and Perth

Recap

The weekend started off OK across the South West with a moderate swell and fresh and gusty SE winds, while further north the swell was smaller and a little average.

A new SW groundswell filled in overnight Saturday and peaked Sunday morning with solid and windy waves across the South West under fresh to strong SE tending E/SE winds while Perth was fun and clean in the 2ft range. Geraldton offered clean waves in the 4ft range early before an onshore change moved through.

Today the swell was easing with less than perfect winds across all but Gero, which saw morning offshores for a short period.

This week (Oct 21 - 24)

Tomorrow isn't looking too flash with the swell becoming tiny around Perth, while Gero and Margs should offer OK waves at exposed breaks with light morning offshores ahead of localised sea breezes.

Wednesday is still looking like the pick of the week as a good new SW groundswell fills in, generated by a vigorous polar low to our south-west the last few days. Core wind speeds in this low were stronger than previous system and we should see a slightly stronger swell across the state, filling in Wednesday and peaking through the middle of the day in the South West, a touch later further you go north.

Margs should offer 6-8ft sets across exposed breaks with the possibility of the odd bigger one, Perth 2-3ft and Gero 4-5ft into the late afternoon.

Winds look excellent for this swell with fresh offshore E'ly winds across the South West, E/NE in Perth while Gero looks dicey with a light variable breeze before onshore W'ly winds kick in, feeding into a deepening inland surface trough. This will swing winds W/NW around Perth and S/SW down in Margs through the afternoon.

Thursday will see persistent onshore W/SW tending S'ly winds as the swell drops away, easing further into Friday.

Light offshore winds are due to kick back in Friday morning across Margs and Perth with less favourable S/SE winds up at Gero.

This weekend onwards (Oct 25 onwards)

A couple of moderate to large sized SW groundswells are due over the weekend and into next week, but not to any major significance.

This will be from a series of relatively weak but favourably tracking polar fronts through our south-western swell window over the coming week.

The first on Saturday (peaking through the afternoon) will be with average onshore winds in the South West and S/SE tending S/SW winds further north.

The secondary biggest increase Sunday will be spoilt as onshore SW winds linger in the South West, but Perth and Gero may see morning SE winds (we'll review this Wednesday).

Longer term the outlook remains less active with the Southern Indian Ocean becoming relatively quiet. This will be the quietest period we would of seen since earlier this year, so try and make the most of the coming groundswells.
