Southern Tasmania Surf Forecast by Craig Brokensha (issued Friday 28th December)

Best Days: Saturday, Sunday, Monday for keen surfers, Wednesday morning

Recap

Tiny 1ft waves yesterday morning, building into the afternoon with a large W/SW groundswell filling in this morning to a clean and maxing 4ft across Clifton.

This weekend and next week (Feb 29 – Mar 6)

We'll see today's swell easing back in size tomorrow after a peak today, with Clifton still likely to offer solid 3ft+ sets and with a favourable N'ly tending N/NE breeze ahead of afternoon sea breezes.

Moving into Sunday and our secondary large pulse of SW groundswell is on track, with a deepening cold front to our south-west on track to generate a fetch of severe-gale to storm-force W/SW winds through our south-west swell window today and tomorrow morning.

The swell is due to peak through Sunday, coming in at 4-6ft across Clifton, and with favourable N tending N/NE winds, variable into the afternoon.

Unfortunately a trough moving through Monday will bring onshore W/SW winds as the swell eases back from the 3ft range.

Now, we've got one more swell event through next week and that's a mid-period SW swell for Tuesday and Wednesday but not to the size of today's or Sunday's swell.

This will be generated by a strengthening polar front to our south-west Sunday, though wind strengths will fall short of gale-force.

We should see the swell building Tuesday and reaching 3-4ft across Clifton into the afternoon, easing from 3ft+ Wednesday. Winds will be poor and SW on Tuesday, much better Wednesday and N'ly ahead of sea breezes.

Following this the outlook goes quiet, so make the most of the coming swells! Have a great weekend!

These written forecasts are epically good. Nothing personal against the reporter but do wonder why I pay for a Clifton report that’s behind your paywall until 9am when it goes up at 8.20am?

Any way of getting it out around dawn? - at least for the days forecast to be more than three foot?

Good point. Sometimes we don’t even get a report for the day. As a subscriber it can be pretty frustrating. Perhaps everything should be behind the Paywall?
