Small swells for the period, bigger later next week
Southern Tasmania Surf Forecast by Craig Brokensha (issued Wednesday 22nd March)
Best Days: Friday morning, Saturday morning, Sunday morning, Monday, Tuesday
Recap
Tiny waves yesterday, a touch bigger today but with terrible onshore winds. A new SW groundswell expected this afternoon has started to climb slightly on the Cape Sorell buoy, but conditions will remain poor as it kicks late.
This week and weekend (Mar 23 - 26)
This afternoon's increase in SW groundswell should peak tomorrow morning across Clifton with 2ft to possibly 3ft sets early, easing into the afternoon and back to 1-2ft Friday.
Unfortunately it doesn't look like we'll see our period of variable winds, with a moderate to fresh S/SE'ly from dawn, leaving no quality surfing options.
Friday should be clean with variable winds and the smaller leftover swell.
Into the afternoon the first of two inconsistent SW groundswells are due, produced by pre-frontal W/NW fetches south-southwest of WA, pushing closer towards us along the polar shelf.
This swell and a secondary swell for overnight Saturday and Sunday should keep 1-2ft sets hitting Clifton right through the weekend, with offshore winds each morning.
Next week onwards (Mar 17 onwards)
Into Monday yet another SW groundswell pulse is expected, generated by a strengthening but south-east tracking polar low south-west of us Friday night and Saturday morning. Due to these factors we're probably only going to see 1-2ft sets continuing Monday will all day offshores.
Now, the stronger mid-latitude frontal progression firing up next week is still on track, with an initial vigorous front due to push across us Monday evening, generating a small W/SW swell for Tuesday maybe to 2ft.
A broader and more favourable storm forming on the tail of the initial front should generate a better W/SW groundswell for later Thursday/Friday, but check back here Friday for more details.
