Southern Tasmania Surf Forecast by Craig Brokensha (issued Monday 28th March)

Best Days: Tuesday, Wednesday morning, later Thursday, Friday, Saturday morning, Sunday onwards

Recap

Good clean 1-2ft waves through Saturday morning ahead of a strong afternoon increase in SW swell as winds swung onshore shortly after lunch.

Sunday's large and powerful W/SW groundswell came in around forecast with solid 3-5ft closeouts across Clifton, with better surf at other spots as winds remained offshore all day.

A drop in swell was seen through the afternoon, easing back further from 3ft this morning with offshore winds again.

This week (Mar 29 – Apr 1)

We'll see the swell continue to drop away, but a reinforcing SW swell this afternoon, should still keep 2ft to possibly 3ft sets hitting Clifton tomorrow morning before fading through the afternoon and further from 1-2ft Wednesday morning.

Good conditions are due both tomorrow and Wednesday with all day offshores.

A low point in swell activity is due Thursday morning, but later in the day and Friday morning a new long-range SW groundswell is due, generated by a vigorous polar low firing up south-west of WA this evening.

A fetch of severe-gale to storm-force W/SW winds will be generated through our swell window, with a good 2-3ft of groundswell due. The timing isn't the best though with a late kick Thursday on dark, peaking overnight and then easing quickly Friday.

Friday morning's probably the best chance for size, with offshore winds both due Thursday and Friday.

This weekend onwards (Apr 2 onwards)

There's plenty of W/SW groundswell due over the weekend, but the storm track of the fronts generating these swells is not ideal at all.

A couple of strong and broad fronts will fire up south-west of WA under the influence of the Long Wave Trough, projecting towards and through the Bight, through our western swell window.

Two separate W/SW groundswell pulses are due, the first for Saturday, building from a small 1-2ft to an infrequent 2ft to possibly 3ft later in the day.

A secondary slightly smaller pulse is due Sunday to 2ft+ before being followed up by some better SW groundswell to 2-3ft later Monday and Tuesday morning.

Unfortunately an onshore change is due through the say Saturday with Sunday onwards being cleaner with W/NW winds.
