Southern Tasmania Surf Forecast by Craig Brokensha (issued Wednesday 22nd July)

Best Days: Thursday for beginners, Monday afternoon protected spots

Recap

A small spike in SW groundswell due yesterday was only reported at 1-1.5ft, but a better increase should have been seen through the day, with the Surf Coast, which was less favourably aligned for the swell picking up inconsistent 2-3ft sets.

Today we were back to tiny waves with nothing to recommend.

This week and weekend (Jul 23 – 26)

We're now looking a slight kick in W/SW swell tomorrow from a vigorous front passing under us today.

A fetch of gale-force W/NW winds should produce a tiny 1ft+ wave tomorrow for beginners under favourable N/NW tending N'ly winds.

Come Friday the surf will be tiny to flat and with N'ly tending N/NW winds.

Tiny surf should continue Saturday and Sunday but into Monday, a solid kick in S/SW swell is due to build across the South Arm, as a vigorous cold front pushes in slowly from the west.

This front is due to stall to our west Sunday resulting in no increase in size, with a fetch of S/SW gales only moving into our swell window Sunday evening. This fetch is forecast to be projected north into us Monday, kicking up a stormy S/SW swell through the day, likely reaching 4-5ft or so later in the day with strong SW winds.

The front will continue north-east through Tuesday, with a rapid drop in swell expected under W/SW winds, but we'll have a closer look at this on Friday.

Longer term, a strong and favourably tracking low is forecast to develop through our swell window and generate a good SW groundswell pulse for Thursday, but again we'll have another look at this Friday.
