Southern Tasmania Surf Forecast by Craig Brokensha (issued Wednesday 1st July)

Best Days: Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday morning

Recap

Yesterday started small but a strong kick in new W/SW groundswell should have been seen into the evening, peaking overnight and then easing from 2-3ft this morning.

This week and weekend (Jul 2 – Jul 5)

Tomorrow's mix of swells are still on track, with a vigorous polar low currently to our west, generating a fetch of severe-gale to sub-storm-force W/SW winds through our western swell window.

This system will push east and across us this evening and tomorrow, aiming a better aligned fetch of severe-gale SW winds into us, with an elongated trailing fetch of S/SW gales down to the polar shelf.

A mix of W/SW and then SW groundswell are due to fill in tomorrow, coming in at 3ft through the morning, before kicking slightly through the day to 3-4ft or so.

Besides an early W'ly tomorrow, a strong SW change will create poor conditions.

Friday will be the day to surf as the mix of SW and S/SW swells easse from 3ft or so under NW winds.

The SW swell due over the weekend has been pulled ahead in timing, with the strong polar front generating the swell due to push up and into us through Saturday now.

This low has formed south-west of WA and will swing in along the polar shelf and up towards us while generating a fetch of severe-gale W/SW winds.

A strong SW groundswell will result, building through Saturday from 2-3ft during the morning to 3-4ft later in the day, with a peak early Sunday to 3-5ft.

Winds on Saturday should persist from the W most of the day across Clifton, with excellent N/NW winds Sunday.

Next week onwards (Jul 6 onwards)

Sunday's swell should ease from 2-3ft Monday under favourable morning N/NW winds, but a fresher E'ly is due later in the day as a funky surface trough moves across the region.

Longer term we may see this trough form into a low, but latest updates have nothing significant on the cards. Therefore make the most of the coming period of swell.
